After the eviction of the mountain settlement in Igoumenitsa now refugees are threatened by police raids in Patras

After the eviction of the mountain settlement in Igoumenitsa now refugees are threatened by police raids in Patras

Following the huge eviction of the jungles of Igoumenitsa at the 9th of June, Patras became the second war region in the governments cruel fight against the sans-papiers who are trying to leave the country. The government seems to set a clear sign that the ports of exit towards Italy are now a no-go for refugees and migrants. Will the Apartheid ruling Igoumenitsa come to Patras now? It seems so. The eviction of the informal settlement of refugees in the marshalling-yard of St. Andreas is another example of the cruelness of Greek authorities. Dozens of African, Asian and Arabic sans-papiers used to live there in provisory huts, inside and under the old trains under miserable conditions just in order to survive until they would reach the day of their successful departure from Greece. Many others lived in Patras just because they had nowhere else to go, no support and no money. Among the many sans-papiers are also asylum seekers. Just like in Igoumenitsa the government has made itself clear that nobody of them is wanted in Patras. Newly issued Pink Cards (asylum seeker temporary residence permit) include the order that they are not allowed to stay neither in Igoumenitsa nor in Patras – a restriction that is already included in all deportation orders (paper valid for 30 days for sans-papiers). Asylum seekers also cannot get anymore a renewal of their cards in the two port cities.
The police raids in Patras show the same brutality and cruelness as the one in Igoumenitsa. The sans-papiers have not only been beaten, not only their belongings and plastic huts were destroyed, not only have they no access to their basic rights and needs and suffer from homelessness and mere hunger but they have been deprived of the last thing they had – their dignity. In these days the clear message of the government that they are illegal and not wanted is showing once again its ugliest face.
Hundreds thousands of asylum seekers are waiting since many years for their cases to be proceeded. The Greek government has to deal with a backlog of 47.000 open asylum procedures – the appeals procedure usually takes place after more than 8-10 years. Meanwhile, the very limited 850 places of reception centres can not answer the needs of thousands of homeless refugees. There is no welfare support and no integration procedure neither for asylum seekers nor for recognised refugees. More than ever refugees are stuck in Greece without any support and confronting daily violence of the authorities or right wing extremists. For this reason most newcomers to Greece do not want to stay but try to leave in places like Patras and Igoumenitsa. The ones who live there are the poorest, the ones lacking other resources to leave the country. They live from the rubbish, from the support of solidarity groups, from looking for 50 Cents at the shopping-trolleys outside of supermarkets. The police raids take them even this small existence they managed to have. They get beaten, the police takes their money and mobile phones and destroys their blankets, clothes and huts, cuty off the water supply, they are arrested and transferred to prisons in Athens or elsewhere in order to brake their will and their struggle for a better and safe life. The result: Hundreds of sans-papiers walking back to Patras from the prisons where they were released; people without a blanket, without clothes, without food, without even one Cent in their pocket.
In 2009 police had proceeded a similar eviction of the informal settlement of Afghan refugees in Patras. The consequence: illegal push-backs (forced deportations over the land borders to Turkey) of hundreds of refugees. Among them also asylum seekers and other highly vulnerable persons! This raises the question: What happens to the masses of arrested now?
This point of desperation is where the Greek government wants to have the sans-papiers and then they will promote their new programmes for voluntary return funded by the European Union. This is protection a la Grece!
We demand from the Greek government to stop the police raids and the ongoing brutality and instead invest in the construction of a functioning protection system!
NO ONE IS ILLEGAL!
NO BORDERS!
RIGHTS FOR EVERYBODY!

Chronic of a wave of police raids in Patras
1. 8th of June until 20th: Police raids in the trains in St. Dyonisios and in St. Andreas marshalling-yards: more than 300 arrests! Some refugees were released others transferred to prisons in the region of Achaia prefecture or to Athens; destruction of baracks and belongings; cutting of water, beatings, police burned some personal belongings.

2. 26th-27th of July: At least 150 arrests daily. Only the ones with Pink cards were released, most others transferred to Athens. The arrests continued also in the jungles where the Afghan refugees live.

Short summary:
The Doctor of the World have declared their strong concerns about the ongoing use of violence against migrants – independently from their status – who are stuck in Patra trying desperately to leave Greece. They have been hit with clubs even on their arms, legs, heads and their genital organs are only some examples of the violence by authorities that have been registered by the doctors of the organisation. The use of violence without any declaration about the reasons for the arrest are illegal and inhuman misuses of power.
The Doctors of the World also report the technical exclusion of the refugees and others in need from the medical support of the organization, which constitutes a violation of the right on medical support. Thus, bodies of the government undermine programmes that are being paid by the Greek state.

French Soldier Shoots Afghan Civilians in Kapisa

A French soldier has opened fire on a civilian car in northern Kapisa, killing three Afghan civilians including a woman and a child.
The French military says the soldier started shooting when a driver failed to stop near an army convoy on Tuesday night.
Three other civilians were also wounded in the incident.
Afghan president Hamid Karzai has repeatedly warned international troops to take greater care and reduce the number of civilian casualties.
The French ambassador has visited the presidential palace in Kabul to formally apologise for the incident, President's Office said in a statement.
President Karzai has condemned the incident and said that the apology does not return the lives of people, added the statement.
French defence minister Gerard Longuet said the soldier acted in self-defence when he opened fire on the car, and voiced "deep sorrow" over the deaths.
France has around 4,000 troops in the country most of them based in Kapisa province.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy during his visit to Afghanistan on 13 July announced that 1,000 French troops would leave by the end of 2012.
French soldiers have been part of the Nato-led forces in Afghanistan since 2001.

Europe needs migrants despite the crisis, says commissioner

21.07.2011 @ 09:18 CET
EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Migrants are often an unexploited asset that national governments should be using to help lift their economies out of crisis, EU home affairs commissioner Cecilia Malmstom has said.
"Many member states have failed in migrant integration. There is so much competence around us, trained physicists, engineers cleaning our stairs, doing jobs they are clearly overqualified for," Malmstrom told reporters when presenting the results of an EU-wide survey on the integration of migrants.
Migrants are often over-qualified for the jobs they are doing (Photo: European Commission)

Noting that integration is firstly a matter of local and then national authorities, with the EU able only to facilitate the sharing of good practices, she recalled how the region of western Sweden recruited 65 doctors among existing migrants who were working as bus drivers and in other jobs for which they were over-qualified.
"With one year of language training and a little updating of their skills, these people were able to be hired as doctors. In the end it was much cheaper than educating for six-seven years someone, giving him or her training and waiting to have enough experience to be hired," she said.
But Malmstrom admitted that things have changed in the past ten years and that xenophobia is on the rise even in the traditionally migrant-friendly Scandinavian countries.
"We can see out of the analysis that there is a fear of migrants. The scepticism towards migration is there and big," she said about the results of the first Eurobarometer on migrant integration.
Some of these negative feelings are related to bad integration, the feeling that migrants don't make enough effort to learn the national language, the study shows.
"But it's also because people knew very few migrants. They live parallel lives, they have no Swedish friends, their kids have no Swedish classmates."
Malmstrom invoked economic and demographic arguments - that migrants are needed to fill the gap of a national working force going abroad, as is often the case in eastern European countries, and that of an ageing population in western Europe.
With migrants having contributed, for instance, to 30 percent of Spain's economic growth before the crisis hit, the commissioner insisted that migrants continue to be needed even as the crisis forced many Spaniards into unemployment.
"Why should people pay for the collapse of the boom? Many businesses still say we can't find people to do jobs such as picking strawberries," she noted.
Amid budget cuts all over Europe, social programmes for migrant integration are often a preferred target.
"Here is where EU money could help. I've proposed to the European Parliament for only two funds to be set up in the big home affairs area - security and migration - to replace the existing six funds with six different legal bases," the commissioner said.

Dublin-Deaths between Kerkyra/Greece and Bari/Italy on 15th of January 2011

The following testimony of Amin Fedaii, a 16-year-old afghan refugee, is alarming. More than 20 refugees (mainly from Afghanistan) died while trying to flee from Greece and to reach their relatives and friends in other European countries.
The asylum system in the crisis-ridden Mediterranean country has entirely collapsed. Refugees cannot find protection neither any income and often even no accommodation. Against this background deportations to Greece according the Dublin II-regulation have been stopped in many European Countries, but the affected persons got stuck in unbearable conditions in Athens or in the harbour-cities of Patras and Igoumenitsa. While EU-citizens can travel without any problems, refugees are trapped: a regular exit is refused, although they have – particularly if they come from war-zones like Afghanistan - good chances to receive a residence permit on humanitarian grounds in many EU-countries.
Amin survived and is now living in an accomodation for minor refugees in Hessen, Germany. But he had to experience the meaningless death of 20 persons by drowning, because firstly entry and afterwards their rescue has been refused: 20 more victims of a merciless european border regime, which obviously is calculating with the death of refugees.
More than 2.000 refugees and migrants died in the Mediterranean Sea within the last 6 months, mainly when they tried to reach Malta or Italy from Libya or Tunesia. Dead bodies in the Mediterranean Sea are washed ashore daily. Besides the bodies also their faces, hopes and dreams are lost. These daily deaths, be it at the external or internal European borders, remain shocking.
The victims are warning and accusing: This Europe is not safe, human rights and refugee rights have lost all relevance! They ask the ones alive to take action against this Europe of Frontex – borders and walls. And to struggle and to invent a Europe of solidarity, overcoming the deathly migration regime as it happened in history with the dark sides of the Middle Ages.

When I tried to flee Greece
I first tried to flee Greece in January 2011. In Athens, they put us in one truck with 200 persons. Beforehand, they told us that the truck would have air conditioning. It had not and so we ran out of oxygen soon with so many people. Soon many people fell unconscious. We started knocking the boards and screaming for help, but the driver did not react. One person had decided not to enter the truck before and we had his mobile number, so we called him to come and open the door for us, because we where not far yet. He did not come quickly, so we had no other chance and we called the police. They picked us from the truck and kept us for one night in police station.
We started once again to Igoumenitsa soon and we were shown the ship that should bring us to Italy. This boat was obviously in a bad condition, but we were so desperate and in need to find a way out of Greece and so we entered. We were many persons: about 260 mainly Afghans. We left for Italy.
I felt very queasy, I was in the bottom of the ship and tried to sleep. I was not really sleeping I was so afraid. I was drifting away. Then my friend woke me up: “Get up! There is water inside the ship.” There were several cracks. The crew tried to pump down the water but it was not successful. It became 5 PM and there was more and more water inside the ship. I was feeling a panic, I felt it was the last minutes of my life now. The ship lost more and more of its wooden parts. We had buckets and with five persons we tried to get out the water with these buckets. It was impossible. The others had already lost all their hopes. The Captain still said: “Don’t worry, we will be in Italy soon. We are only one hour distance from Italy.” At 7:30 PM the bilge was full of water. It was over. The captain tried to find help. We called the Italian coast guard. They asked us where we are, but we could not explain exactly. They explained the weather conditions are very bad, it was getting stormy more and more. There was only crying and praying now. There was no land in sight and no help. I was crying and vomiting all the time, finally there was only blood left to vomit and so I vomited a lot of blood.
At 9:30 PM we had lost our hope, but than we saw a military ship. We were waving and shouting but they did not come closer. This ship was without a flag. Some of us could speak English and they said there were English words written on it.
After another half hour there was a big Dutch vessel. Our engine was broken down meanwhile. The Dutch vessel put on some big lights and they threw nets and ropes for us to enter their ship. But many of us were in absolute panic. They were pushing others and many fell into the sea. More than 20 people died in this situation. But the Dutch vessel rescued more than 200 of us. It was a Dutch captain but the whole crew who rescued us was from Philippines. I was one of the last persons that were rescued.
Some minutes later our ship sank completely. We were all shivering but there were no blankets, we were so many. The Italian coast guard refused us entry. And so the Dutch vessel brought us back to Greece. They started moving back at midnight and we reached Kerkyra at the island of Korfu 12 hours later. It was around 11 AM the next day. When we arrived, there were a lot of Greek and foreign journalists and people from UNHCR but there was a lot of police and they refused to let them talk to us.
They put us in a camp and than for one week in prison. We got only one meal per day and the Greek police treated us very badly. After one week police brought us to the mainland and then 2 and a half hour by bus to a city were they showed us the bus to Athens. All this happened in January 2011. In May I finally reached Germany.

ΦΑΣΙΣΤΕΣ ΤΡΑΥΜΑΤΙΖΟΥΝ 4 ΜΕΤΑΝΑΣΤΕΣ ΣΤΟ ΝΕΟ ΚΟΣΜΟ: Έξω από τις γειτονιές μας οι νοσταλγοί του Χίτλερ FACISTS START NEW PROGRAMM OF BEATING MIGRANTS.

8 immigrants charged for their protests after the death of a 27-year old immigrant

Last Friday (July 15) Goulam Bamper Khan, a 27-year old immigrant from Pakistan,  was found dead in the new detention center of Elliniko (close to Athens). He had been asking for a doctor repeatedly, but the only thing the detention center authorities did was to notify an unskilled member of a NGO, who just subscribed some medicine. Hours after this so-called medical examination, Goulam Bamper Khan fainted. Other inmates asked for an ambulance, but this was considered “not necessary”. Finally Goulam Bamper Khan died. Immediately riots broke up, as 98 inmates started shouting and pushing their cells’ doors. Riot police entered the detention center, chose 8 immigrants and started beating them up “to give a lesson to the rest”.
On Monday July 18, these 8 immigrants were charged for arsoning, escape attempt, rebellion provoking, rioting and damaging the detention center

The snouts of all enemies, indigenous and foreign, need to be rubbed in the dust through a general insurrection!

if at one time Afghanistan was the graveyard of its enemies, doubtless today this country has become a collector’s showcase of aggressors and meddlers. Except for criminals and their ilk, no honourable and patriotic Afghan can accept the prevailing corruption or the bullying and humiliation imposed on it by its neighbours.
Now, after years of fighting and committing crimes in Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Kunduz, Wardak and other provinces, the locus of the fighting has been dragged to the east of the country. It is now the turn of the inhabitants of the eastern parts of our country to be decimated and driven out of their homes by Pakistani bombardment, US and NATO assaults and Taliban savagery. The unabashed roughshod riding of the Pakistani militarists which has claimed the lives of hundreds of our defenceless compatriots is in conformity with the policies of the occupiers. The aim is to create fear and use the Pakistani threat as a rationale for perpetuating their presence in Afghanistan and for underlining the “necessity” of setting up their permanent military bases here, thus setting the stage for the perpetual bondage of our country.
The Pakistani government is one of the most despicable regimes in the region. For decades it has hatched traitor and criminal jihadi “Tanzeems” for Afghanistan, given ISI blessings to the assassination of countless Afghan patriotic personalities, and has procreated, financed and brought to power the Taliban and continues to nurture them to this day. The Pakistani government has spared nothing in rearing and supporting Hekmatyar’s fascistic Hezb-i-Islami party and today’s suicide attackers and terrorists. The latest Pakistani crime against our country and people, the most recent treachery it has committed, is its blatant violation of the Afghan-Pakistani border. In the eyes of our people, Pakistan is one of the prime causesfor destruction and devastation in Afghanistan.
After the discovery and killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad, Pakistan has utterly lost all credibility in the eyes of its friends. It therefore seeks to regain some dignity be exploiting to its own benefit the utterly scandalous, all-pervasive mafia domination of the political, military and economic situation obtaining in Afghanistan. The Pakistani government seeks to exploit the brouhaha surrounding the shifting of responsibility for the management of the war against the Taliban to the so-called “national” Afghan army to flex its military muscles and wring concessions for itself and its Taliban proxies from the moribund Karzai government. In a situation in which the likes of Rahim Wardak, the so-called Afghan “defence minister”, and many other members of the cabinet, provincial governors, ambassadors and other Karzai-regime bigwigs are former agents on ISI payroll, it is quite natural that they should all feel too embarrassed to stand up to Pakistan, and for Mr Karzai not to dare to utter a word in denunciation of Pakistan’s treacherous aggression against Afghanistan. In fact, when Karzai grovels and toadies to the Taliban, again and again addressing those savage murderers as “Talibjan” [Taliban, dear], “disaffected brothers” and “Afghan bachaya” [O ye sons of the Afghan motherland], how is it possible, and on what basis is it conceivable, that he will not kowtow to the godfathers of the Taliban? A government so utterly hated and detested by the population, composed by the most sordid, most sold-out and corrupt criminals in our history, will never be able to stand up against the neighbours’ bullying and aggression and staunchly and resolutely defend the people and the country’s borders.
At this juncture in time, the arch-traitors, criminals and heroin barons of the so-called “opposition” and “National Front” are seeking to masquerade as being “anti-Pakistan”. Thisis as revolting for the people of Afghanistan as the pronouncements of presidential and foreign ministry spokesmen and other closeted Pakistani-spy spokespeople. Those who have been raised in ISI cradles and have spent their lives in rapine and plunder have no right to vociferate against Pakistani bullying and thuggery, and spew their lies of “defending” this wounded land and people.
Under the obtaining circumstances, the people of Afghanistan know of absolutely no individual or group in the Cosa Nostra of the Afghan state and government who can inspire a rising up against the treacheries of the Pakistani government. Any summons by any government official for resistance against Pakistanshall get the reception that it deserves from our people: the reception of the exhortations of a traitor criminal, worthy of being slapped into his face. The only suitable response can be the historic insurrection of all tribes and ethnicities making up the people of Afghanistan in emulation of the heroic insurrections of the Iranian and Arab peoples –a general insurrection primarily against the occupiers, the tinpot Afghan regime and their “opposition” bed partners. The rising tide of such an insurrection movement for freedom in Afghanistan and even its relative success shall make the governments of Pakistan, Iran, or any other inimical government, think twice before entertaining any thoughts of greed or aggression against this land.
We firmly believe that unless the occupiers are expelled, independence is gained, democracy is built and secured and criminals of whatever ilk are brought to justice, any country –be it a neighbour or distant– will be in a position to threaten and betray our country and impose its will upon us.
The Solidarity Party of Afghanistan deems the American and NATO occupiers to be enemies of our people and demands immediate and total withdrawal of their forces from our country. And just as we warned the criminal regime of Iran, while expressing our solidarity with the people of Pakistan we warn the spy- hatching government of Pakistan to stop launching rockets and missiles against our mourning people and desist from adding any further to its record of treachery and betrayal of Afghanistan. On the glorious day of the insurrection of the peoples of Afghanistan and Pakistan for freedom, the Pakistani government will have a lot to answer for.
The world has changed. The thunderstorms of the Arab Spring are sure to reach Afghanistan and Pakistan and consign the ISI-state of Pakistan and the Mafia-state of Afghanistan like chaff to the dustbin of history.

May the meddling hands of the Pakistani government in Afghanistan be cut off!

Hail to the advent of independence-seeking, democracy seeking national insurrections in Afghanistan and Pakistan!

Solidarity Party of Afghanistan

OPEN MEETING FOR ORGANIZATION KINITOPOIISIS DIAMARTYRIAS
SAVVATO16 / 7, 4pm, theater, VARNALI SQUARE IN GREEK
This afternoon he lost his life in the new detention center of the Greek Pakistani immigrant's Goulam Bamper Khan, aged 27. It is a crime of racist indifference to human life that exists within the detention center ELAS just like out of them.
The administration of the Police rushed to conceal the criminal neglect that led to death ... citing the lateness of the ambulance, at a time when the unit was providing medical assistance in jail! But the detainee in administrative deportation of immigrants had complained of pains in the morning treated with painkillers and later collapsed without refund and the request for transfer to hospital was not accepted until they came to vomit. In the ambulance incident was reported to be fainting.

Immediately after the announcement of the unjust death, the prisoner protested strongly. The government called the riot police to suppress the rebellion by breaking into the jail and using shields and batons them.

Not surprising, of course, neither haste to conceal ELAS responsibility for the unfair loss of Bamper Khan, or that the riot police showed once again the brutal face toward the insurgents.

The immediate evacuation and transportation of prisoners to other departments and detention centers and referral to an investigating eight detained on charges of staging and attempted escape is a vindictive act directed by the political leadership of the Ministry of Citizen Protection. It is a message that he is willing even condemned to death immigrant detainees to pursue its policy of deportations and racism.
I wonder how long will slide down the slippery slope the racist government to divert the anger of the world from the steps of the memorandum and the Medium Term? It is time to stop them once and for all!

Today, at 5pm there was intervention by the commander of the detention facilities delegation with the participation of the Greek Christos Kortzidi Mayor, the Aldermen Greek Y. Ioannidis and M. Triki, President of Greece Pakistani Javed Aslam, Petros Constantinou, Athens city council States ANTARSYA and TEC from the Greek

Swiss Government Bans Documentary On Execution-Style Deportation

The scenes shown in the film are a reconstruction of a forced 'Level 4' deportation carried out by the Swiss authorities. By conducting numerous interviews with people that have been personally involved in the deportation procedure and by analysing the training material used by the Swiss police, it was possible to obtain a clear picture of the procedure

We were persecuted in our home countries, now we are persecuted here!” – Interview

Interview with the refugee N., from Eritrea
23rd of May 2011, Komunisia
by infomobile

N. spent a very long time in the mountains of Igoumenitsa. With 10 months he belongs to the experienced men on the mountain. He has been deported from Italy several times. Still he never lost his hope that one day he will get out.
The truck to the other Europe
“I promise to see you in a better place,” N. says and his eyes are full of energy.

How long are you in Igoumenitsa?
In Komunisia here? I have longer than ten months. More than ten months here!
What did you expect from coming here to Igoumenitsa?
You know, the reason for my coming to Komunisia, I am suffering too much bad in this country. I need to leave this country. For this reason I came to Komunisia. Unfortunately, during these days we are suffering from a very bad situation: from the police and from the racist people, from the civil society here in Komunisia.

It was better ten months before compared to now, how was it?
Before, we were living in a better situation but now during these days we are living a very bad situation. We are suffering. Even the food … it is too much difficult for us to get food. For example, if you want to get food from the supermarket the police they will arrest you and they will take all the food from you, which you buy it from supermarket and throw it into skoupidia (Greek: rubbish). Second, they will send you immediately to the prison.
Just because you wanted to take food?
Yeah, only for food. This is our problem.
What do you eat then?
You know, just now here there are some people with us they have two days / one and half day that they never eat at all. They never eat at all! For example, I have my friend yesterday since morning time until night time at one o’clock the police they never give him a chance… by secret ways they want to enter the town so that they get some food. They never eat for one day or one day and half.
How difficult is it to collect the money to buy food?
All of us we have no money at all, you know. We collect this money by sharing everyone one Euro, 50 Cent, 20 Cent. We collect all this money so that to give it to somebody to go to the supermarket. To bring to us food or to go to the bakery to bring for us bread. Before two days we were waiting for our friends here to bring us food. We are still waiting for him, but unfortunately he never came. Today at morning time he called us from the prison. He says, that I am in the prison. The police they will send him to prison directly from the supermarket and they took all the things he bought and they throw it in the skoupidia.
Also, there was an old man with us, his name is Ahmad, this guy at morning he can see but at night-time he cannot see at all. He becomes almost blind. This old man he went to the supermarket to buy milk. When he entered the supermarket the police came to him and they said: ‘Put all the things down. Don’t take anything from the supermarket!’ Immediately they took him from the supermarket and send him to prison. Just now they took him to another prison – from Komunisia to Florina. In Florina the police they said to him: ‘We don’t have any money for your transport. Until now he is walking with his foot. Yesterday he called us. He said there are so many dogs, they follow him and they want to bite him. He said that, it is too much difficult for him to come back to Komunisia.
You yourself, you have also been arrested?
Yes, I myself two times I have been arrested. One day they arrested me from the bakery. I take bread from the baker and the police they will send me. And another time I needed to go to the hospital. Also the police saw me. I left the hospital…also they will send me to the prison.
Can you describe this experience that you walked from Florina until Komunisia?
Unfortunately when the police send me to Florina, when they take a life from Florina I have no any money for transportation. Four days I come on foot from Kasarakasia. Kasarakasia exactly this is a small village in Florina and nearly of Yugoslavia and Albania. We are three persons. We come from Florina until Ioannena four days on foot.
What do you suggest as a solution?
We are suffering from very bad situation. No one can eat. Now we are arrested in mountain. We stay in the mountain. Just like the monkey. For 20 days or 21 days in mountains. Now, there is too much difficulties for us. It is too much difficult for us to go buy food from supermarket. I hope from the police, that they allow us to go one hour or two hours to supermarket to take food, no problem. But just now we are too afraid to go to supermarket. I hope that the police give us the chance just one hours or two hours to get food from supermarket.
I myself I am one from the black people. Our problem, our coming here to Komunisia is only for to leave this country. You know that the situation in this country is too much bad. We are in need to go from here. We are really persecuted in our home countries. The life, which you get it here in Greek is too much bad with us. Worse than Third World country. We were persecuted but were living in very good situation, in very good situation before. Even the refugees whom they are living in Third World countries they are living in very good situation. Here we are living just like animals. Like animals! There is no human rights here. The police will never respect human rights. At last god he created all of us – even black people and white people. At last all of us god created us. It is supposed to be. The Greek police they will know that. We are human beings like them. But the police people and the racist people they never respect the human rights here.
I myself I have been as a refugee in Sudan. I left from my country because I have very big problem there. I am condemned to death at the international court in my home country. For this reason I escape. I came another country. I seek asylum with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. I have been living in camp, open camp. I am studying in this country which I seek asylum for six years. Even the university, I studied in university there. I am graduated as electrical engineer.
"Everybody is welcomed in my house!"
I have worked in this country for three years and half. And despite of the fact that we have been suffering from a little problems, we didn’t feel one day that we are persecuted. We consider our selves just like the civilians of this country. See the deals in Third World country and see the deals in Europe here. According to my own imagination, I don’t think Greece is Europe. I hope to be in Third World country. I hope that I will be deported in Third World country. We are really persecuted people in our homes. Until here they are following us. We escaped from our country because of persecution, but also we are suffering from other things here.
We have our friend he die here. Nearly to port here. But unfortunately the police they allow the driver which he kill my friend to go. No problem? Why did they allow the driver go? This guy which he is dead, he is not human being? He is human being. But here there is no human rights. You know that. Why the police they allow this driver go? He killed our friend here. We are suffering from so many problems here. We are really persecuted people here. We are suffering from very bad persecution in our home country and in Greece country!
My friend he died. He needed to cross the road. The driver he shoot him by car; he accident with him by car. He died. He died here and we go to the police, to the asfalia to explain to them. We gave them the number of the car. We said to them this is the car. They take fiche. He was one of our friends. The police he said to us: ‘Ok, no problem. Wait!’ We wait two days, three days… Even we call somebody, he come from Athens representing the UNHCR in Greece. He come here and he knows that…

Look! I am talking to you now and see the people the police is following them. Now, now the police are following them.
This guy that he is dead, he is from Sudan. We call also someone who is working for the embassy of Sudan. He come here and he talk to us, he talk to the police. We took this guy, which he is dead from Komunisia to Ioannena and we took him to the grave in Ioannena. We buy it 2.500 for him. 2.500 Euro so that to give us chance to put him here in Ioannena – in Greece! We made a sharing all of us. We buy it 2.500 Euro from the government of Greece.
Why do you think did the police not find the driver?
I am not talking by myself. I am talking representative for all immigrants, I mean from various countries: Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea… all… Marrocco, Algeria… all of them. Maybe this happened to somebody who is from Sudan, but this could happen for me, for another person. The police here never respect us. We respect the police and we respect the rules of the police. But the police will never respect us!
Does this make you loose hope, or make you think that you want to go back?
According to my imagination, the police they do this, because they need us to go back to our home country. But we are persecuted in our home country. If we are not persecuted in our home country can we stay here on the mountain just like monkeys? Even if the monkey sometimes leaves the mountain, here the police never allows us!
Police hunting the refugees and pushing them back to the mountain.
We are really persecuted people in our home country. The police they maybe need us to go from Greece to return back to our home country. If we are not really persecuted person in our home country why we stay in the mountain? Immediately we would return back to our home country.

What are your biggest fears?
The biggest fear, first, we have from the prison. See, see now, you see the police following some people, you see? … Very fear for us prison! They send us to prison. Yes, we know ourselves, that we enter without documents. All the police will give us hartia (Greek: paper, it is a deportation order valid for 30 days). The police will give you Hartia (Greek: paper, here meaning the deportation order valid for 30 days that all sans-papiers get upon release from prison) for one month, two months, three months…to leave this country. If today you come out of the prison and the police catches you in same day, immediately they will send you again to prison. Here, there is no any rule here. There is no any rule here!
What do you wish?
For me, for everyone living here in Greece not only for us here on the mountain, all the ones living here in various towns in Greece, I hope that to leave this country, to go from this country! Because I am sure, even the people, who are now living in Athens are in a bad situation. You know, I hear very bad information about Athens. I heard very bad information. Just now, just during these days the racist they will make so many problems with the immigrants people or with the refugees people in Athens, in Komunisia, in various country. For me I wish that, all those people that they are immigrants, they leave this country out. This is my hoping to them.
How can you protect yourselves?
Here we have not any protection. Everyone he protect himself. Three weeks ago there is a great demonstration here. The racist they make a demonstration here against us. And we know that there is a demonstration against us and we have some other people form another organization they help us, they come here and they tell us: ‘Today racist people they will make a demonstration against you. Don’t go down near control so as to join yourselves with them. Maybe they will make problem with you.’ We respect the saying of the organisation. We did not go to them. We stay on the mountain. There are only some people of us they are still playing football down. We didn’t join the Greeks, but the racist they come to the mountain and they fight with us. They throw us by stones and despite of the fact that the police is supposed to protect us, the police they will be with the civilians of Greece against us.
There is no any protection for us here! Everyone protects himself. Now we are living in mountain. We are living in mountain! The snakes living with us, the rats living with us, the scorpions living with us. Believe me, when the night-time comes we are never able to sleep. First, we are afraid from the police. Second, we are afraid from the second police. Second police it means: the snakes, the scorpions, the rats and all the other animals living with us here on the mountain. From 8 o’clock in the night-time until 7 o’clock in the morning time, we are not sleeping at all.
Making tea in the dark. Lighting fire with plastic rubbish.
Maybe in the morning hours we will get one hours or two hours of sleep. But the rest of the day…no we are never sleep at all. We are watching what happens with the police. We expect the police. We really feel persecution here. Of the police… We are afraid from the police, we are afraid from the asfalia (Greek: civil police). We expect them at any time on the mountain.

What is your worst thing you experience here?
There are so many people, if you see them they are youngest people, but because of the hunger, the bad situation, never sleeping, they are destroyed already. They become just like old men, because they are thinking, they are afraid of the police, they are afraid from the very bad situation here.
Where do you want to go, in which country?
I want to go British, German, Sweden or Norway, because these are progressing countries. We will get human rights there. We will get good deal there, I think. We are feeling there are human rights in various countries, but here in Greece… We were living better in Africa! Better than Greece. Greece is too much bad!
What do you wish from the Greek people?
I know they don’t want us. I said to you, they don’t want us to stay in their home country. And we don’t want to stay in Greece. We come here so that to leave this country. First, we come from our home country because we are persecuted people in our home country. We escape from the persecution in our home country and we come here to Greece and we get the persecution again – there is real persecution in front of us. How should we seek asylum in Greece? I can’t seek asylum in Greece! I saw so, so many persons who seek for asylum in Greece, but the government in Greece they give you only a Red Card. Sometimes I saw that the police they will take the red card of some people, they will torn it and they will send him to the prison. It means that this red card do nothing for you, can never protect you. How to get asylum here?
We have no house, we live just like homeless people. Homeless people in Africa, in Third World country, better than us! Better than us in Greece.
"We are being besieged. They keep us on the mountain like in a prison."

What I need from the Greeks: We don’t want to stay with you in Greece. All of us… Thus, the only thing that we need is to allow us to go from your home country. Only this I need from you. Because the Greek people they never respect the human rights.

Did ever a racist attack you?
Two times. Two times, and so many times I escape from them. So many times I escape from them. And now I have someone who is my friend. He is from Somalia. The racist they attacked him inside the town and they broke his mouth. Just now he is in hospital. He went to Athens to cure himself.
Are you trying to go to get food at the moment?
No, I am afraid. I am afraid I don’t try every day to go. You know when night time arrives, immediately I am not going to go. Not at morning time. Because we have no protection! Even if the police they sometimes they saw people beating you they are just watching.
And you try every day to go to Italy?
Every day I try. Every day. Since morning time until night time I am trying. If I get a chance, I will go! Four times they deported me from Italy. And we have so many people here they deport them 5 times, 6 times.
This journey means risking your life again for finding protection
When they deport you, they will put you in the prison here. Then they will send you to a prison far away. Why they send us to prison? They never want to give us travel documents. They don’t want to give us documents to leave their country by legal way. We are in need to go by illegal way. If you go by illegal way, if the Italian government, – meaning the Italian police – they saw you and deport you to Greek, here the government, the police government, they will send you to the prison. Sometimes you spent 2 months, 3 months in prison. There is no rule! Sometimes you spent 1 day, 2 days. Then they will give you free to go. But here there is no rule. There is no law. Sometimes you spend 6 months; sometimes you spend 7 months. According to the law of the police; according to their moods.

There are people here that have been deported from other European countries?
More! We have more. Just now there is two people who have been deported 5 months ago from Belgium. Also, did you know France? They deport many people from France before. 9 months ago.
Is there something that makes you happy?
I myself will be happy when I leave from Greece – when I leave from Greece, when I leave from Komunisia! But this town I never forget it because I am living very difficult life in this town.
Thank you! and wish you all the best..

Recent articles about immigrants and refugees in Bulgaria

Recent articles about immigrants and refugees in Bulgaria (and Greece...) by the bulgarian journalist Juliana Koleva (in English).

The "Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence" website states that "Juliana will research access to justice for asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants in Bulgaria - the challenge to become legal and the impact of asylum status rejections and detentions.

Juliana will also consider the legal and political perspectives on immigration and asylum, as the country is on the point of joining the EU passport-free Schengen travel zone. She will ask if Bulgaria is failing to meet its obligations with regard to vulnerable immigrants and asylum seekers."

Greece: Frontex stops immigrants’ boat

Two Turkish smugglers and a group of 21 sans-papiers immigrants were detained on Crete on Tuesday after a vessel belonging to Frontex, intercepted their boat off the island of Kythira.
The migrants, of Afghani origin, are being held in the premises of the old City Hall of the port of Hania.
The boat the smugglers used had set sail from Turkey and had been destined for Italy.

DEMANDS OF IMMIGRANTS IN IGOUMENITSA

First and foremost we would like to thank those individuals and groups who are standing and are sympathetic to immigrants by understanding the problems that we have in our countries.
Secondly we would like to brief you that the immigrants in the mountain of Igoumenitsa have their worst political problems in their countries. As known to everybody, these countries suffer from dictatorial leaders, wars with the neighboring countries and some countries suffer from civil wars. Most of the immigrants are highly educated and were persecuted in their countries and left their countries in order to save their lives. But unfortunately the immigrants suffer from inhuman treatment from the security officers including the police, military and the security, the officers who are responsible of those issues are not paying tension to the issue. This type of treatment contradicts democracy and protection of human rights.
As are suit of these, we as immigrants set the following demands.
1. Security: we demand the removal the confinement of immigrant to the mountain. Because this has become a real obstacle to from practicing our daily activities.
2. Nutrition: Nutrition is a basic to human life and it is impossible to live without nutrition. We are not allowed to enter the town and buy food and other basic needs with our money. Some times happen that if the police catch us in the town with the things we buy, they throw goods in the waste box (skoupidia) and take us to the prison. We need solution for this matter.
3. Health: most of the immigrants tin this mountain suffer health problems that can not be ignored or postponed. Of course there are Doctors of the World under the bridge, but do not have health testing equipment and enough medicine. There are many immigrants whose legs and hands are broken by the military commandos. In this case we are not able to go to the hospital and have medical check. Because, if the police catch us there, they imprison us with our sickness. Even there are people arrested with their hands and legs broken. We need solution for this.
4. Basic Solution: finally, we kindly request the political decision makers for the basic solution for our problems in Greece.
