Greek “Hospitality”: 30 new huge detention centres and massive police raids

The Minister of Citizen Protection is planning to “clean” the city centre of the Greek capital from the immigrants and “host” them in the new detention centres he has announced to create in all over Greece in the near future.
Today he had a meeting with the Greek Police and announced massive sweep operations starting tomorrow. We already see a massive police presence in public space and daily arrest all over Athens. The question is, how can the police raids we already observe every day become more huge and worse?

Charter flight UK to Afghanistan 28th March 00.10hrs

Mass deportation by charter flight to Afghanistan, 28th March

No Borders! Stop Deportations! | 25.03.2012 21:33

Was 26th March, postponed to 28th March, 00.10 hrs

Many people know that the UK has embarked in a disastrous war in Afghanistan, alongside the US and NATO.
What most people do not know, or are not aware of, is that the people who arrive in UK fleeing the war in Afghanistan are routinely detained, denied protection and sent back to Afghanistan, on regular charter flights London - Kabul: there is a deportation charter flight to Afghanistan about every two weeks– charters to Afghanistan are the most regular of the mass deportation flights from the UK.
Usually young boys are left to stay in UK until they turn 18, then they are told they have to go back; if they don’t go they are arrested and put forcibly on a plane.
Aziz Hussini, aged just 18, is in detention, due to be forcibly removed from the UK to Afghanistan on this charter flight. Agents of the UK Border Agency arrested Aziz on his wedding day in Glasgow, snatching him at the Registry Office. His fiancée Gemma is a British citizen. Aziz arrived in the UK in 2009 as an unaccompanied minor. Perhaps the UK government thinks that no one in this country cares what happens to refugee children when they reach 18, that we are all happy to see them kicked out of care and into the refugee camps of Afghanistan. His friends and devastated fiancée have set up a campaign to stop him being deported and to have him released.
 http://www.ncadc.org.uk/campaigns/aziz_hussini/index.html

Aziz was first booked on a charter flight due to depart the UK on the 12th of March. The flight was cancelled at the last moment because Reliance had concerns about the safety of its employees, due to worsening security situation in the aftermath of the massacre of 17 innocent Afghan civilians by a US soldier. Reliance is the private security firm who took on the dirty work to carry out deportation, after G4S private security killed Jimmy Mubenga during a deportation attempt. If it is dangerous for private security guards to fly to Afghanistan, how can it be safe for Afghan refugees? How can it be safe for a 18 years old who has lost all contact with his family and has no support there?
Next they booked Aziz on a charter flight the 26th of March, that has now been postponed to the 28th of March, 00.10 hrs, for unknown reasons.

Many times the Afghans struggle before they are deported, they don’t want to be sent back, they go on hunger strike, but there is very little publicity around the issue. Many Afghans are detained and put on the ‘fast track’, which further curtails their right to obtain proper legal representation. The ‘fast track’ procedure for asylum cases was introduced supposedly to deal with claims that are straightforward or clearly unfunded: so how can people from a country at war be put on the fast track? How can exiles be deported to a country at war anyway? In fact, most European countries do NOT usually deport people to countries at war: it’s only the UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands who do. Note that until quite recently people fleeing war were normally left to stay in the UK on humanitarian grounds, if they weren’t granted asylum: it is only from the eighties and Thatcher era that the UK government began to tighten the screw, build prisons for immigrants and deport people to war zones. The subsequent Labour and Tori governments have continued to curtail the rights of migrants and refugees. To obtain refugee status in the UK became increasingly difficult and nearly nobody is given humanitarian protection nowadays. Then the UK in the past deported Jews to Nazi Germany.

Despite, or perhaps because of their military involvement in Afghanistan, the UK authorities are very reluctant to give protection to the Afghans who arrive in the UK, and for Afghans to be recognized as refugees by the UK is extremely difficult. According to the Home Office, if somebody is not safe, say, in Helmand, he can safely relocate in Kabul, which is total bullshit: there is no part of Afghanistan that is safe, the country is destroyed by a war of 30 years and life expectancy is of 45 years only, the lowest in the world. Afghani casualty figures are higher than at any time since the invasion, and up 8% on last year. The Taliban explode car bombs and send suicide bombers everywhere, they have carried out major attacks in Kabul and other parts of the country under control of the US and Afghan army. The Taliban are held responsible by NATO for the majority of civilian casualties. However, the casualties numbers provided are angrily disputed by Afghan sources, including political figures and human rights agencies, who are accusing the UNAMA February report of grossly underestimating the civilian casualties by the US and their allies. Civilian casualties are however on the rise and amount to over 3000 in 2011. The recent massacre of 17 innocent civilians including 9 children, allegedly by one US soldier who was allegedly drunk or had gone crazy – and is now being tried in the US and ‘does not remember anything, the bodies were burned, may not be the work of one man only… Sgt Robert Bales killings seem to fit in a pattern of raids on civilians’ homes, random shootings and arbitrary killings that have exacerbated the Afghans. In recent months several US and coalition soldiers have been killed, not by insurgents but by Afghan soldiers. The burning of a pile of Qur'ans and other Islamic books by some US troops provoked a wave of protests and riots all over the country that left 24 Afghans and 6 American soldiers dead. Despite the planned deployment of US and coalition forces by 2014, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan John Allen said he believes American troop withdrawals should stop in 2013, keeping at least 68,000 by 2014, in contradiction of Obama administration plans to have combat troops out by that year.

After the invasion of the Russian Army in 1979, there were 7 million Afghan refugees around the world, most in Pakistan and Iran. After the ousting of the Taliban in 2001, almost 5 million people went back to Afghanistan. In the following years, another wave of refugees left Afghanistan due to the ongoing hostilities. Nearly one in three of the world refugees come from Afghanistan. The UNCHR and other refugee agencies have admitted failure in providing for the refugees who have returned, who mostly fail to reintegrate and live in abject poverty in slums and camps. Several, including many children, have died of cold and deprivation during the Winter months. Most Afghans refugees live in poverty in neighbouring countries but Pakistan now want to deport the Afghans in irregular position back en masse by 2013. Only a minority of Afghan refugees make it to Europe, and a small minority make it to the UK. Almost all are young men and underage boys, very few families arrive here, women and girls often do not make it this far due to the harshness and brutality of European border controls, but there are many Afghan women stuck in Athens for instance.

The Bush administration* decided to invade Afghanistan in pursuit of Osama Bin Laden. First they demanded the Taliban to hand Bin Laden over, in the wake of the 9/11 massacres of 2993 people. The Taliban asked for evidence of Bin Laden involvement, the US did not have any so they invaded the country and ousted the Taliban, replacing it with the corrupted puppet government of Hamid Karzai. To this day there is no evidence whatsoever that Bin Laden or al Qaida were behind the 9/11 attacks. Originally the US secret services helped set up Al Qaida, for the purpose of fighting the Russians, but there are ongoing relations between CIA and Al Qaida to this day.
Many engineers and experts in demolitions claim that the Twin Towers could only have collapsed the way they did the in a controlled demolition, and they are calling for a truly independent investigation.

With the end of the Cold War a very essential element in rallying popular support for war went missing: the enemy. It was therefore imperative for the US military-industrial complex to find another powerful enemy and provide the justification for their wars under the banner of the War on Terror. What the Bush administration* did in Iraq: they went for Saddam, destroyed the country for some weapons of mass destructions that did not even exist, and made over 2.000.000 refugees. The real reason for that war was that they wanted the Iraqi oil. In Afghanistan they want to build some gas pipelines to get the gas of the region.

Refugees are hostages in the endless imperialistic war for exploitation of resources. Unwanted by the same Western governments who caused the war in the first place, they are liable to be detained in special prisons for immigrants and often are sent back to the dangers they tried to escape; asylum procedures have become more and more of a complicated farce and a façade. As the government sets targets of people to be deported, many asylum seekers are refused for the mere purpose of meeting those targets. For Afghans as I said it is very difficult to get asylum. Many Afghan refugees know that, and do not even bother to apply for asylum. some cannot apply because they have fingerprints in other countries. They live ‘illegally’ in the UK, open to exploitation and always afraid to be caught in Gestapo-style raids by UKBA officers and police on workplaces, underground stations and people’s homes.
Mass deportations from the UK to Iraq have stopped also thanks to a sustained political campaign both in UK and Iraq. Sadly mass deportations to Afghanistan continue. We need to raise the issue, build resistance and step up the fight.

Notes:
*just a name, George W Bush was only a puppet in the hands of others, unlike his father who is a man of importance

Known as Operation Ravel, the charter flights to Afghanistan are the most regular of the mass deportations from the UK, taking place roughly once a fortnight and usually involving two coaches of deportees. Detainees are given Removal Directions (RDs) with a standard flight number ‘PVT008′. Companies known to have participated in these flights over the years include Hamburg International Airlines and more recently, Lufthansa-owned BMI. Notorious coach company, WH Tours, based in Crawley, provide transport to the airport.

response to US soldier massacre in Kandahar

It is a quiet night in the village of Panjwai, Kandahar. Children are sleeping next to their mothers in simple mud homes. The quiet night is disturbed by a sudden loud explosion. A terrorist has entered one of the homes, he sprays a rain of bullets on the unsuspecting children and mother. He is on a killing rampage, as his bullets splatter the children’s blood on the walls and floor. He does not even spare the two year old clinging on to his mother for dear life. He then proceeds to burning the deceased bodies by pouring chemicals on them. This terrorist does not wear a black turban on his head nor a beard on his face, instead he wears US military fatigues, with the American flag sewn next to his US staff sergeant badge.
On March 11th, at 2am in Panjwai, Kandahar, another massacre has taken place in the name of American democracy. In the next few hours, the mainstream media along with NATO’s propaganda arm attempt to paint this as an “isolated” incident by a “lone rogue soldier”, but the surviving witnesses tell a very different story. They mention several soldiers being present during the massacre. As disturbing facts and photos of scorched bodies of children emerge, it is evident that there is more to this act of terrorism by soldiers from the same troubled base (Joint Base Lewis-McChord) as the “Kill Team” soldiers. Looking at these repeat massacres over the last decade, it is evident that these are not isolated incidents and in fact, a direct result of not only the “training” of these soldiers, but the very nature of war and militarism itself.
The body of an Afghan child
Once again, just like the “Kill Team”, we the Afghan people receive shallow apologies from US and NATO officials with no real accountability of the system that creates these monsters.
It hasn’t even been over 24 hours since this bloodbath occurred, so how can we accept apologies for an intended massacre, our tears have not dried up yet, and they never will. The blood splattered on the walls of our houses, the scorched bodies of our children, the pain in our hearts will always be a reminder of the slaughter that took place in order to “liberate” us. We hope you hear this loud and clear, that in the process of our “liberation” you have made sure we can never be FREE from this misery unless you leave. We are living, breathing, dead bodies that have died with the ones we loved; although we still have not lost hope for unshackling our nation from these repressive hands that drop bombs not food, that kill not save lives, that take everything in exchange of a promise we never asked them to make. We do not wish to “endure” this “freedom” you have imposed upon us. The masses see this conflict through the eyes of the occupier, it’s time you see this pain through the eyes of the occupied.
Over 16 dead and 9 of them children, we are enraged by these ongoing atrocities. We are left with our throats dry, as we choke behind tears. And so we grieve worldwide as we hold vigils in multiple cities around the world to mourn our dead. We the people of the world are refusing to let this act of terrorism go unnoticed.

Asylum-seekers in Serbia and Kosovo

Balkan visitors

THERE is something odd about seeing Afghans and Somalis stumbling about in the snow in western Serbia. Ivorians and Congolese are no less exotic in Kosovo. In fact, they are just some of the thousands of illegal migrants pouring through the western Balkans in a desperate search for a better life in the more prosperous countries of the European Union.
In the new edition of The Economist I report on the illegal crossing of tens of thousands of migrants across the Greek border with Turkey. In the past many found work in Greece or were able to procure mostly fake documents which could get them into other countries. A favoured practice was to get oneself smuggled on to a lorry at Patras or Igoumenitsa and head for a ferry to Italy.
Things are different today. Although Greece is within Europe’s border-free Schengen zone it has no physical frontier with any other Schengen country, and flying out of the country has become almost impossible thanks to tight controls. So illegal migrants have begun to seek new land routes, many of them via the western Balkans. The main one leads from Greece to Hungary, via Macedonia and Serbia.
No one can put a figure on the migrants flowing northwards this way. But in Serbia, since 2008 the number applying for asylum has risen from 51 to over 3,000 last year. The vast majority seek asylum simply to avoid problems traversing the country, says Rados Djurovic of Serbia’s Asylum Protection Centre.
The issue is becoming a minor nightmare for local officials. Authorities have to plod through the procedures of processing applicants only to find that by the time they need to speak to them they have long departed.
As part of its bid to join the European Union Serbia has modernised its asylum laws. This has seen the refurbishment of an 84-bed centre for asylum-seekers in the little town of Banja Koviljaca on the Bosnian border. The numbers in the centre fluctuate, but Robert Lesmajster, the manager, recently said there were 80 residents, plus 119 linked asylum-seekers living in town.
Bidding for asylum gives applicants access to health care and time to arrange passage to Hungary or through Croatia. Most importantly, it gives them an identity document. This gives them access to wire services from where they can pick up money sent by family or friends back home; a useful alternative to travelling with wodges of cash.
In Serbia 60% of asylum seekers are Afghans. Anosh, an Afghan in Banja Koviljaca, told me that he fled Afghanistan because his uncle wanted to kill him over a land dispute. He and his fellow Afghans have little to do. They watch Afghan television and walk around town. Anosh teaches his friends English.
A Pakistani called Hashim told me that he wanted to go to Germany. “I have no home, no job,” he said, when I asked him why he had left. It had taken him two and a half years to get here, he said, via Iran, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia. Many of the migrants work along the way to pay for the next stage of their journey.
Mr Lesmajster says keeping his centre clean is a struggle. Today he is dealing with an Afghan woman who claims to be the mother of a little girl who had arrived with another woman. He reads the riot act to a drunken Somali, who shows me a small lesion on his leg and demands to know if I have heard of Al Shabab, Somalia’s Islamist militia, whom he claims beat him up.
Mr Lesmajster says he and Serbia are respecting the law by looking after these people, but you can tell his sympathy is wearing thin. They will all be gone in a few months, he says. “They abuse the law. They are fake asylum-seekers.”
Kosovo has also opened a centre for asylum-seekers, although the numbers here are much smaller than in Serbia. In 2009 there were 31 official asylum-seekers in Kosovo. In 2010 that rose to 267 but in 2011 it fell to 189.
That may be because Kosovo has moved to plug a hole in its immigration system. The country does not have a visa system. Some migrants, wise to this, used to fly to Pristina from Istanbul. That loophole has now been closed: an Afghan or Congolese coming to Kosovo will be asked for a certified letter of invitation. If the invited person absconds the issuer of the letter can be held responsible.
According to Islam Caka at the interior ministry, 30% of migrants in Kosovo came via Macedonia, 22% via Serbia and 5% via Albania. Of those 71% are from Asia and 29% from Africa. The biggest single number are Afghans who make up 35% of the asylum-seekers in Kosovo.
Fatmire Ismaili helps run the asylum centre in the Germia district. During the Kosovo war she was a refugee herself, given asylum in Britain. She is sympathetic and teaches some of the children Albanian, but, as in Serbia, few of the migrants are interested in staying for long. They are fed and looked after but constantly produce new problems. Ms Ismaili mentions the difficulties she has finding malaria medicine for Congolese victims.
The stories some migrants tell are fluid and inconsistent. Khalid, a Tunisian, told me that he had arrived via Albania and wanted to go to France. But Ms Ismaili said he had told her that he had lived in Montenegro for several years. He spoke what used to be called Serbo-Croatian. Mariam Diaby told me she was a Muslim whose people had been attacked by Christians in Côte d'Ivoire. But earlier she had told Ms Ismaili that she was a Christian.
She would work if she could, she says. “Someone else” had bought her a ticket to Kosovo from Istanbul. “My mother was killed. I just wanted to flee. I did not even know this country existed.”
For the last 20 years people from the Balkans have fled to other parts of Europe and the rest of the world. Today several thousand Serbian and Kosovan people seeking asylum in richer lands are returned home every year. It is perhaps a sad sign that Serbia and Kosovo are now importing as well as exporting illegal migrants.

12 fascist attaked afghan refugee in the athens city greece

Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich:

Stand up against Deportations within Europe!
Dublin II means: They play football with us. They kick us from one country to the next, they play with us and they waste our time.“
(Teenager from Afghanistan, who crossed half of Europe on his flight before being deported to Hungary)
We all know about deportations – but the fact that about one third of all deportations take place within Europemight be unknown to many. Last year, almost three thousand so called „Dublin-Transfers“ from Germany were carried out. The legal basis for this is the so called Dublin II regulation. Unlike suggested by this name, the persons affected by this regulation are not being deported to Dublin, but in most cases to RomeMilanBudapest or Malta.
The Dublin II Regulation lays down rules on which European state is in charge for processing an application for asylum. With few exceptions, it thereby follows the “principle of causation”: Having “caused” the entry of the asylum seeker by issuing a visa or by not properly protecting its borders, the first member state in which the asylum seeker sets foot is held responsible for the examination of the application for asylum. If the refugee applies for asylum in another member state and this is detected, e.g. by means of an entry in the European fingerprint database EuroDAC, he or she will be deported to the state “in charge“. Thus, the central European states (particularly Germany and France) got rid of their responsibility for refugees by shifting it on to the states on the external borders of Europe.

Many refugees are fighting back desperately – and we will stand up in support on March 30th at different airports! For due to the Dublin II regulation refugees are threatened with deportation even before their asylum procedure actually started. Many of them lived through several years of odyssey through Europe, searching for protection, fleeing not only the situation in their country of origin, but now even detention under inhumane conditions in Hungary, homelessness and hunger in Italy or complete lack of prospects in Malta as well as fearing deportation to a persecutory state from Poland.
“If you want to understand what Hungary means for refugees, then you have to try to understand what it means living for six months in a prison only bearable with Tramadol [Tranquilizer]. Hungary is the only European country I know where people get detained in high security prisons only because they requested asylum. And this even though Hungary signed the refugee convention [United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees].” (Refugee from Iran, in a deportation camp in Hungary)
In 2011, the European Court of Human Rights judged that the situation for refugees in Greece constitutes a breach of human rights. Almost all Member States were forced to abandon transfers to Greece. But in Italy, the refugees' situation is not any better: Many have to live in makeshift shacks made from plastic sheets near the train stations of Rome, Ostiense or Ponte Mammolo.

„We couldn't stay in Italy, because there are no human rights. We didn't have anything to eat. We didn't have accommodation. The basic things. Without a roof over one's head, one lives like an animal. As soon as you obtain documents, they will call upon you: „Today, you have to leave!“ (Refugee from Eritrea, threatened with deportation to Italy)
Although there are fewer “transfers” to Malta, the lack of prospects is similarly grave, nevertheless. For this, it is no coincidence that in the last year it were mainly transfers of Somali refugees to Malta, which have been fought against by the affected persons, who were supported by local activists.
“I was arrested for 18 months in Hal Far [detention camp in Malta]. After I was released, I lived in a tent city. When I got a job, I left for three days, but wanted to return. As I came back, they said: 'You cannot sleep here any longer, because you didn't sign the list for three days.' They said: 'You are 'out of system'.' I asked them, who would help me, being 'out of system'. But they just said: 'Well, you now have to figure this out by yourself.' (Refugee from Sudan, in Malta since 6 years)
For refugees from Chechnya, Polish closed camps are like prisons. Furthermore, food as well as medical assistance provided there is absolutely insufficient. In addition to this, they have to fear being deported to the persecutor state Russia, a fact that forms the main reason for resuming their flight to other European countries.
“In Poland, my application for asylum was rejected two times, even though I have been arrested and tortured several times in Chechnya and obtained a confirmation by the Human Rights Organisation Memorial/Moscow proving that me and my family are in danger. Still, Poland executes deportations to the Russian Federation. If I can't stay in Germany, I will move on.” (Refugee from Chechnya living inBerlin, at risk of so-called chain (i.e. repeated) deportations)
Stand up together!

Resistance against inter-European deportations indeed pays off, because there is a particularity about the Dublin II Regulation: Transfers from Germany have to be executed within a time frame of normally six months. If this is failed, the application for asylum has to be examined by German authorities.

„I will not let them deport me to Italy once more without further ado. If we remain silent, nothing will ever change. The refugees' situation in Italy is a constant violation of our human rights. Like many other young people, I fled from the permanent human rights abuse in Eritrea. Here in Europe, we experience once more being forced to live under degrading conditions.“ (Refugee from Eritrea, deported from Frankfurt to Italy on December 20th, 2011)

We call out to support refugees, who courageously fight for their rights! Take a stand with us on March 30th: Stand up against inter-European deportations! We invite everyone to show civil courage: Organize church asylum to bridge the time limit of six months. If flying to RomeMilanBudapest or Malta: Watch out for passengers who don't seem to travel voluntarily. And if someone stands up – stand up in support!

„Now I can see clearly how Europe really is: Sending its army to fight us at sea and putting us in terrible prisons. Together, we have to start another journey. A journey to a safe place, which might exist one day.“ (Woman from Eritrea, arrived on the Greek island of Lesvos)

We will accept this invitation. Standing up against inter-European deportations is the first step along the way. One of the stations of this common journey is will be March 30th, 2012. There will be simultaneous protests against intra-European deportations taking place at the airports of Berlin, Düsseldorf, FrankfurtHamburg and Munich.

From July 13th to July 22th, 2012, there will be an antiracist action camp taking place in Cologne and on July 22th a mass demonstration at Düsseldorf airport.
Stop deportation!
Towards a different, welcoming Europe!
On Friday, March 30th, 2012 in:

+++ Berlin (Tegel airport) at 5 p.m. +++ Düsseldorf airport at 5 p.m. +++ Frankfurt  (terminal 1) at 5 p.m. +++ Hamburg (terminal 1) at 6 p.m. +++ Munich airport at 5 p.m. +++
