Suspected smugglers open fire on police-Frontex officers in Evros

Four Greek border guards and two German officers, dispatched to the Greek-Turkish border by Frontex, emerged unscathed on Friday (20/5) after four suspected Turkish smugglers opened fire on them with hunting rifles. The smugglers had been preparing to disembark a group of nearly 100 migrants onto an islet in the River Evros, when they spotted two police patrol vehicles on the Greek side of the border. The suspects fired their guns in the air at first and then at the two vehicles which were a few hundred metres away. Neither the Greek nor the Frontex border guards returned fire but contacted the Turkish police that arrested a group of 97 people including the suspected smugglers. According to the Head of the Evros police officers’ Union the number of irregular immigrants entering Greece via the Evros River has increased to more than 100 per day following a brief lull.

Local reactions to announcement for detention centres

Announcement by the Citizen Protection Ministry on the establishment of 10 detention and 5 first reception centres to host over 5,000 irregular migrants has caused strong reactions in respective communities, fearing rise in criminality. According to “Initiative against Detention Centres for Migrants” in Evros, the prevailing opinion among the local community is that citizens are able to accept only improvement of living conditions in existing centres, but not the creation of new ones. Several representatives of local authorities of Igoumenitsa, Sparti, Aspropyrgos, Amfilohia, Xiromero and Elliniko have also expressed opposition to the creation of centres.

Citizen Protection Minister: “Immediate repatriation for illegal migrants”

In an interview on Sunday’s “Eleftherotypia”, Citizen Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis heralded that the government is proceeding with “the immediate repatriation of illegal migrants” and urged all citizens, local communities as well as local authorities to demonstrate a positive attitude towards the government’s planning especially with regard to the establishment of detention and first reception centres. Papoutsis stressed that “we have the obligation to create modern facilities that respect human rights”.

Repatriation flight for 40 Afghans
40 irregular migrants from Afghanistan who opted to voluntary repatriation departed from Athens on Monday (23/5).  Irregular migrants signing up for the repatriation program are given a ticket and 300 euros each. Their return is assisted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and police officers stationed at the airport. The plane's departure marks the start of the second phase of the repatriation program, since another 500 third country nationals -all lacking travel documents- are expected to be voluntary repatriated by the end of June. Another 586 irregular migrants have already been returned to their homelands during the first phase of the program.

Violence through the eyes of migrants

Racist violence against migrants in Athens centre has reached explosive dimensions in the aftermath of the murder of a 44-year-old Greek male early in May. Despite that the family of the 44-year-old has publicly denounced the exploitation of his death by the ultra nationalist group “Chryssi Avgi”, migrants’ testimonies of racist incidents rapidly spreading around are indicative of the prevailing atmosphere. “Yesterday a young Greek woman together with a young man passed me by as I was walking down the street. Suddenly the woman started to beat me on the head with a big wooden stick”, said Ali, a 20-year-old Afghan. “This happens every day in Athens centre for a long time. They beat everybody”, he added. Hassan, a 9-year-old Afghan boy was attacked together with his brother and their mother as they were on their way for the kitchen soup provided by Athens municipality. “My legs hurt me so much. I had to run a lot these days”, he said. 23-year-old Ahmad from Egypt is standing scared outside an apartment building. A few days ago he was attacked by five Greeks who raided into his home. “Police were there, watching everything”, he said.

Thousands of migrants in squalid conditions in Athens centre

Municipality services have registered over 400 sites in the centre of Athens (derelict buildings, bus shelters, parks, etc.) where homeless people including many undocumented migrants sleep in squalid conditions, among rubbish and rats.  More than 2,000 migrants living in the triangle of Geraniou, Pireos and Sofokleous Streets are practically homeless. According to a report by the Greek Ombudsman, a great number of irregular migrants live in rented apartments of the centre in conditions that are beyond all tolerable limits of decent human living. Meanwhile, owners rent inadequate rooms at extremely high rates. Ahmed from Somalia lives with his wife and five children in a 10 square metres room that he rents for 200 euros per month.

Greece following Spanish model for Evros fence

Greece is studying Spain’s use of border fences, in two of its cities on the North African coast, ahead of the construction of a similar barrier to irregular migration in the northeastern region of Evros. The construction in Melilla consists of 11 kilometers of parallel 3-meter high fences topped with barbed wire, with video cameras, regular watchtowers and a road running between them to accommodate either police patrols or ambulances. The fence in Ceuta is similarly equipped. The construction of the fences in Ceuta and Melilla has produced results,” said Deputy Labour Minister Anna Dalara. There is also a reception centre there, which helps for the proper treatment of undocumented migrants (medical care, social and psychological support, legal aid etc.) Dalara also noted that Spain had not just relied on fences to tackle immigration problems but has also put into place integration policies in which local authorities play a big part.

Intercultural mediators to be placed in 21 hospitals

109 trained intercultural mediators will be placed in 21 hospitals in Athens and Thessaloniki in order to help immigrants communicate with hospital staff in their language and explain their medical history. According to specialists, immigrants’ access to public health services will contribute to their integration in the Greek society.

Asylum granting – an impossible dream

Asylum seekers in Thessaloniki may wait up to 2 years to be granted a pink card, according to a report by the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) that was presented during a seminar titled “Political Asylum and immigration: Challenges for Greece and Europe” that was organized by the Aristoteleio University of Thessaloniki and GCR. This was the case of an asylum seeker from Nigeria who was holding an “Administrative Note” from the local Aliens Directorate for about one and a half years instead of the pink card which he received in April 2011 after having submitted his application in October 2009.  Moreover, foreigners who want to apply for asylum do not receive proper information on the procedure, while there is also a lack of interpreters.

Composer’s comments on migrants cause stir

Comments by the respected Greek composer Dionysis Savvopoulos, according to which undocumented immigrants living in central Athens, should be sent to sparsely-inhabited Aegean islands for farm work under the aegis of the UN Refugee Agency, has caused a stir. Speaking to Athens municipal radio Savvopoulos said that the problems being caused by a burgeoning population of irregular migrants in the city’s historic centre were overwhelming and called on authorities to declare a state of emergency and remove all migrants from the area. “Athens cannot become the dumping ground for all these people,” Savvopoulos said, noting, however, a few days later that “legal migrants and people entitled to asylum should not be affected”.

Hands of from Afghan refugees in Propylaea

The Rector of the University of Athens threatening forcible removal Afghan refugees have set up information kiosks in Propylaea. Citing a manifestation of the spark of Mikis Theodorakis and "citizens' complaints about the image of the city," Mr. Dean is threatening to call the riot police to evict the refugees. What if the Afghan refugees entitled to asylum both under common sense and based on international agreements? What if, for months the government is deaf to illegally claim the law? What if I have done dozens of events in Propylaea without creating any problems the pavilions of the refugees? What if in this case there are no excuses of "violence" nor the "prevention education capacities?" Mr. Dean for all you are interested to put his own bit to Building a clean city where the explosive social problems will be hidden under the mat, and will be excluded entirely invisible to the public. So we need to do this clear: Any attempt against the Afghan refugees is a total assault on the rights and freedoms of all.

Igoumenitsa/Greece: Mountain-jungles threatened by eviction

komunisia_small
On May 21st the Greek government announced in the TV-channel SKAI their new plans of repression. In a period of massive fascist pogroms in Athens, they react with more police, massive arrests and the construction of 14 new detention and deportation centres. One of them should be close to Igoumenitsa. Additionally, the government said, it was already conducting police raids in Igoumenitsa and further actions would include the eviction of the informal settlements of the sans-papiers in the jungles of Igoumenitsa. There have been around 400 arrests during the last weeks and the police announced to arrest the (as they say) 300 remaining migrants.
Igoumenitsa is the second largest exit-port for migrants from Greece to Italy. Around 500-700 refugees from all war-zones of the world (Sudanese, Eritreans, Afghans, Saharaouis from Morocco, Iraqis, Kurds and Maghrebinias) are living under inhuman and degrading conditions in the mountains close to the port, waiting for their chance to leave Greece and find a safe haven in the North – “the real Europe” as they say. There are quiet a lot of migrants who stay in Igoumenitsa for many months now. Many of them made it already several times to the Italian ports but were deported before being able to leave the port or apply for asylum. A lot of people have been deported from European countries before due to the DublinII Regulation.
komunisia2_small
They are living in small huts without water or electricity or any sanitary infrastructure. Most of the sans-papiers have totally run out of money. They can not afford to buy food. Every night you see people searching for food in the garbage. They are starving from hunger.!

Greek ‘left’ composer proposes immigrants to be transfered to uninhabited islands

Comments by the respected composer Dionysis Savvopoulos, according to which undocumented immigrants living in central Athens, should be sent to sparsely-inhabited Aegean islands for farm work under the aegis of the United Nations refugee agency, caused a stir on Thursday.
Speaking to Athens City Hall municipal radio station, 984, Savvopoulos said on Wednesday that the problems being caused by a burgeoning population of illegal immigrants in the city’s historic center were overwhelming and called on authorities to declare a state of emergency and remove all migrants from the area.
“Athens cannot become the dumping ground for all these people,” Savvopoulos said, noting that the capital should bar access to any new migrants until the European Union drafts a more effective policy for the repatriation of economic migrants.
Responding to objections by journalist Angelos Tsekeris that exiling immigrants to rocky islets might not be the ideal solution to the city’s problems, Savvopoulos remarked, “it is time to decide whether to live or die.”
The composer also drew attention to the scourge of drug dealing and suggested that all derelict buildings currently being occupied by drug addicts be evacuated and renovated.
The drug addicts can be transferred to areas where drug dealers cannot easily find them, he added

Evros: Border guards unhurt in shooting

Four Greek border guards and two German commandos dispatched to the Greek-Turkish frontier by Frontex, the European Union’s border monitoring agency, emerged unscathed on Friday after four suspected Turkish people smugglers opened fire on them with hunting rifles.
The smugglers had been preparing to disembark a group of nearly 100 would-be migrants onto an islet in the River Evros, which forms part of Greece’s land border with Turkey, when they spotted two police patrol vehicles on the Greek side of the border.
The suspects fired their guns in the air first, presumably as a warning for the Greek-German contingent to retreat. Seeing no reaction, the smugglers started firing at the two vehicles which were a few hundred meters away.
Neither the Greek border guards nor the Frontex officials returned fire but contacted the Turkish police by radio to inform them of the incident. Turkish authorities reacted quickly, arresting a group of 97 people including the suspected smugglers. The ethnic origin of the would-be migrants remained unclear.
Speaking to Kathimerini, the head of the Evros police officers’ union, Constantinos Hatzianagnostou, said yesterday that the number of illegal immigrants entering Greece via the Evros River has increased to more than 100 per day following a brief lull.
Earlier this week, Citizens’ Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis said that a European Union-subsidized project to build a fence along the Greek-Turkish border to keep out would-be migrants was moving forward. The minister also heralded the construction of several new migrant reception centers.

(Pacta Sunt Servanda )

Abdullah opposes peace with Taliban

KABUL(PAN): President Hamid Karzai's principal political rival on Thursday warned of mobilising street protests if the Afghan government did not heed his views on dealing with the Taliban insurgency.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, leader of the Coalition for Change and Hope, and former intelligence chief Amarullah Saleh vehemently opposed peace with the Taliban who executed orders from foreign spy services and spilled the blood of innocent Afghans.
Addressing a huge gathering in Kabul, Abdullah branded Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden as a "criminal and traitor" and said his followers had assassinated Northern Alliance commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.
Denouncing the incumbent government as incompetent, the ex-foreign minister alleged: "Karzai has asked 40 countries of the world to mislead the people and play with Afghans' destiny."
He said the government had been able to make any achievements during Karzai's second tenure as president. A majority of Afghans desired peace only if it did not lead to war, he added.

Pakistan Army, Spy Agency Backed Osama: Officials

Leader of al-Qaeda terrorist network was supported by Pakistani army and intelligence agency, a top Afghan security official said on Tuesday.
Top Afghan security officials, including Defence and Interior Ministers as well as Deputy Chief of National Directorate of Security were summoned to the Senate House on Tuesday.
Briefing senators on security situation in the country, the officials said the death of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan is a proof that insurgent safe havens and sanctuaries are in Pakistan.
The international community should understand this reality, officials emphasised.
"He was not having a guerrilla style life there. Pakistan's army and Inter Services-intelligence (ISI) were supporting him," Interior Minister Gen. Besmellah Mohammadi told senators.
Suicide attacks should be prevented from the places where they are masterminded and organised, Defence Minister Gen. Rahim Wardak said.
"The commanding system of al-Qaeda had lost its focus. They were not controlled from one single location," Gen. Rahim Wardak said. "It could bring a change in the intensity of war in the long run."
Government Information and Media Centre has said international community should target other insurgent leaders, including leader of the Taliban Mullah Mohammad Omar outside Afghan borders the same as Osama Bin Laden was targeted.
"We hope all those responsible for death of innocent people in Afghanistan and all across the world face their due punishment," Head of Government Information and Media Centre Hakim Asher told TOLOnews.
Analysts say other militant leaders, including the Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, leader of Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, and leader of the Haqqani network are in Pakistan being directly supported by Pakistan's ISI.
"The bottom line is Pakistan's spy agency that wants to support and fuel these extremist insurgent groups in pursuit of their national interests," Afghanistan's former ambassador in Britain Ahmad Wali Massoud told TOLOnews.

Pakistan Faces Embarrassing Questions Over Bin Laden

Pakistan has faced tough questions from the US on Monday about how Osama Bin Laden could hole himself up near the capital city of Islamabad, Reuters reports.
The questions came a day after the al-Qaeda leader was killed in a special operation of US forces in Abbottabad not so far from Islamabad.
The disclosure that the al-Qaeda leader was hiding in a compound in Abbottabad is believed to further strain relations between Pakistan and the United States.
Pakistan has always denied that terrorist sanctuaries exist on its soil.
Some of the Pakistani officials in the past had repeatedly commented that Bin Laden was hiding somewhere in the mountains on the Afghan side of the border.
In a White House report previously published, Pakistan was criticised for not being serious in the fight against terrorism.
Pakistani officials then dismissed the report and stressed that Pakistan was a key ally of the United States in the war on terror.
After the news about Osma Bin Laden's death emerged, the Afghan President Hamid Karzai appeared at a press conference describing the al-Qaeda leader as the murderer of Afghan people.
President Karzai said the revelation that Bin Laden was holed up in Pakistan proved that the Afghan people were right.
He said he had always emphasised that the war against terrorism should not be waged in the Afghan villages where there are no terrorists.
"We have always said that terrorists must be targeted in their sanctuaries and in the place where they are fueled, not in Afghan villages where there is no terrorism," Mr Karzai said at a press conference in Kabul yesterday.
Meanwhile, the former Chief of the Afghan National Directorate of Security, Amrullah Saleh, told TOLOnews on Monday that Pakistan is the commanding centre of the Taliban and insurgency in Afghanistan.
He said it was impossible for a nuclear armed country to be unaware of the whereabouts of al-Qaeda leader on its soil.
"Murder of Osmaba Bin Laden on Pakistani territory proved that the Afghans were right," Mr Saleh said.
Osama Bin Laden was killed in a compound in Abbottabad yesterday along with his son and two couriers whom the US intelligence had kept an eye on to track Bin Laden. A woman who was used as a shield was also reported killed and some other women were injured during the firefight in which Bin Laden himself had taken part.
Bin Laden's wife has not been killed in the operation, according to the White House.
Meanwhile, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has said Pakistani forces had not been involved in the US operation against Bin Laden.

USA best partenr killed by his best freinds.USA

Finally the US government announced they have killed their god-son, Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. The USA, for its own political interests, created and funded Al-Qaeda and Osama during the Cold War. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, they attributed it to Al-Qaeda and for its future strategic and military plans tried to portray this group more dangerous and strong than its reality through propaganda.

Fighting Al-Qaeda was an excuse for the US to occupy Afghanistan and Iraq under the name of “war on terror” so it could maintain its supremacy in the world.

During initial attacks on Afghanistan in 2001, the Bush administration thought they still need Osama as a good player in their drama of “war on terror” so he was allowed to run away from Tora Bora. And without any doubt they know his location in the past 10 years through their intelligence and technological means, but did not try to kill him.

Now that the US government and its allies face strong pressure from their public against war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and now in Libya and also economic crisis and poverty in these countries, they try to divert public opinion to another direction by killing Osama and also want to show that spending hundreds of billions of Dollar and killing of their soldiers is not fruitless.

Soon we will witness that the US will enter a new player as its enemy No.1 in the field and use it for its mission to rule the world. In every stage the US govt. needs a fabricated enemy to go to war.

Over the past decades, the people of Afghanistan were the prime victims of the US-created terrorist bands of Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and they faced atrocities, destruction and many miseries in their hands. And now killing of Osama does not seem to have any direct benefit for them, because Osama was finished ten years ago and it was a nightmare of him used by the US government. Our people will breath in peace and only when the ignorant idea and fundamentalism of Osamas and Mullah Omers and the like are sent to dustbin of our history

Osama Bin Laden Killed in Pakistan

Osama Bin Laden has been killed in a special operation near Islamabad in Pakistan, US President Barack Obama says.

US forces have reportedly took possession of Bin Laden's body after a firefight.
President Obama said the operation was carried out by a small number of Americans.
"I report to the American people and to the world, the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama Bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda and a terrorist who was responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children," President Obama announced in a televised address on Sunday night.
He said that after 9/11 the United States quickly learnt that the attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda headed by Osama Bin Laden which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in the US and around the globe.
" And so we went to war against al-Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends and our allies over the last ten years," he said.
President Obama thanked "the tireless and heroic work" of US military and counter terrorism professionals saying his country had made great strides in the effort.
"We've disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our home land defence. In Afghanistan we removed the Taliban government which had given Bin Laden and al-Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al-Qaeda terrorists including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot," said Mr Obama.
British Prime Minister David Cameron also made a televised address saying the news would be welcomed right across the UK.
"Of course it does not mark the end of the threat we face from extremist terror, but it's I believe a massive step forward, he said.
Mr Cameron said Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the death of thousands of innocent men, women and children of every race a religion right a cross the world including the death of many many British citizens both in the UK and other parts of the world.
" I would like to congratulate those who carried out this brave action. I would like to thank President Obama for ordering this action and think it is a moment we should thank all of those who were day and night, often with no recognition, to keep as safe from the threat of terror," said Cameron.
The Taliban have confirmed Bin Laden's death.
As the news emerged crowds gathered outside the White House to celebrate.
US embassies in the worlds have been put on alert because of the possible al-Qaeda attacks.
Bin Laden was considered the most wanted by the United States with a $25m reward on his head.
The al-Qaeda leader was accused of masterminding many attacks against US targets including the 9/11 attack in New York in which 3,000 people lost their lives.
Osama Bin Laden's whereabout was not clear after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan but there were speculation he was hiding somewhere in Pakistan. However, Pakistanis officials had claimed he was somewhere in the mountains on the Afghan side of the border.
Meanwhile, MSNBC reports that the trail that led to Bin Laden began before 9/11.
A senior official in Obama administration has told MSNBC in a background briefing from the White House that the US had started gathering information on people with close relations to Osama Bin Laden from the time he was regognised as a threat.
Detainess had given information to the US on couriers of Osama Bin Laden out of whom one courier in particular has the US attention.
The learnt the man's name in 2007, and in 2009 identified areas in Pakistan where the courier and his brother were active.
Finally it was in August 2010 that the US found their residence in an isolated area in Abbaottabad.
The US intelligence described the residence discovered as a custom built compound to hide someone of significance.
The US had soon found out that a third family lived there in addition to the two brothers, and then learnt that Bin Laden and his youngest wife resided there.
Then the operation was carried out in which a US helicopter was lost, but no Americans died and all of them could safely leave the area by helicopters.
The exact number of Americans involved in the operation has not been disclosed.
The operation team was reportedly in the compound for about 40 minutes without encountering any local officials.
According to unnamed officials quoted by MSNBC, Bin Laden himself had taken part in the firefight.
Bin Laden, his son and two couriers were killed in the firefight, and one woman used as a shield was also killed while some other women in the compound got hurt whose identities have yet to be known.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Bin Laden's body had been buried at sea.
