Indonesia boat sinking survivors brought ashore

Migrants reverting to Aegean route

A crackdown on the influx of undocumented immigrants entering Greece via the land border with Turkey has apparently resulted in people smugglers changing their routes as increasing numbers of migrants are being intercepted on the islands of the Aegean, authorities say.
This month police and coast guard officers detained 146 undocumented immigrants on the islands of Symi, Farmakonisi, Samos and Lesvos, compared to 68 on the islands of the Dodecanese in the first half of this year. On Tuesday, 40 migrants -- chiefly Afghans, Syrians and Palestinians -- were stopped on Symi and 39 -- mostly Afghans -- on Farmakonisi.
Meanwhile illegal arrivals have plummeted in the northern region of Evros, where the presence of border guards has been boosted, with just two migrants stopped on August 25 and 26 compared to 447 on August 2.
Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias told Parliament on Tuesday that talks aimed at revising the Dublin II regulation -- which stipulates that migrants apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter -- were not progressing in Greece’s favor. Athens has lobbied for the regulation to be revised, arguing that it puts a disproportionately large burden on Greece’s shoulders.
As the influx of migrants into the country continues unabated, the number of apparently racially motivated attacks has increased. A young Bangladeshi suffered extensive injuries on Tuesday after being set upon by a group of men in the southern coastal suburb of Flisvos. Witnesses said the assailants drew up on motorcycles before kicking, beating and stabbing the migrant.
A separate attack against a 30-year-old Egyptian in Manolada, in Ileia in the Peloponnese, was condemned by the Communist Party (KKE) yesterday as “raw racist violence.” Two Greek men were arrested for the assault on Saturday during which the migrant had his head jammed into the window of a car door before being dragged for around 1 kilomete

Anti-immigrant view being 'legitimised' in Greece

Greek journalist Manolis Kypreos lost his hearing when anti-riot police threw a stun grenade at him last year

Anti-immigrant and nationalistic discourse has existed in Greece since the 1990s, say experts, but has become more radical with the economic crisis.
For Golden Dawn, the neo-facist movement that scooped 6.9 percent of the vote in the June election, the simmering discontent has proved fertile ground.
“People can now stand up in the middle of a cafeteria and start declaring without a thread of shame that they voted for the Golden Dawn,” says Aristotle Kallis, a professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Lancaster University.
“The Golden Dawn does not create a new phenomenon in Greece. The Golden Dawn, through its radical action, through its very populist action, are legitimising a particular anti-immigrant rhetoric and anti-immigrant point of view in Greece,” said Kallis.
He noted that the party is also targeting the radical left in Greece, including journalists, students and politicians.
The Golden Dawn brands people who oppose their views as “anarcho-communists”, an old-fashioned term Kallis says was commonly used in the 1960s when the country was politically polarised.
Manolis Kypreos, a Greek journalist who worked for the Gastone media group, is familiar with the tactics of Golden Dawn supporters.
“Day-by-day attacks and threats are becoming more [frequent] from the members of the Golden Dawn. The police [are] just sleeping or the police officers are blind or very slow to react,” he told EUobserver in an email.
Kyreos says the Golden Dawn constantly threaten him either through twitter or notes left on his car. “You fucking leftist deaf journalist. Your end is coming. We are coming for you,” was one of the messages he found taped to his car in the morning of 19 August.
He is suffering from near-total hearing loss after anti-riot police tossed a stun grenade at him during a protest against EU-imposed austerity measures at Syntagma Square in June last year. He was taking photos and had identified himself as a journalist.
Kypreos says immigration has profoundly divided the nation with some, like the Golden Dawn, making claims that force is the only appropriate measure to restore the country to its former “glory”.
“Foreigners out!” and “The Garbage Should Leave the Country!” are among some of the party’s favourite slogans.
“The issue with the Golden Dawn in Greece, must be a concern for all of Europe. It is not only a Greek problem,” said Kyrpeos.
He claims members of the party had joined ranks with anti-riot units to help disperse the demonstration last year.
In June, around 30 members of the party broke into the Panteion University in Athens and beat leftist students who had organised an event against the party. Five people were reportedly injured.
Efstathia Lambropoulou, a lecturer in the university’s department of criminology, said the Golden Dawn have not attempted to enter the premises since.
“It happened only once,” Lambropoulou told this website from Athens. “I think it was and is over-estimated. The media and the students overemphasised the reactions or the activities of the Golden Dawn. It is much more rumour than really action.”
Meanwhile, an anonymous writer posted a 2,500 word letter on the Golden Dawn website making veiled threats to the editor of the foreign news desk of Kathimerini, Xenia Kounalaki.
Kounalaki had published a piece called “Banality of Evil” in April calling upon media outlets to blacklist the Golden Dawn from their coverage.
The letter, published five days after her article, also mentioned Kaonalaki’s 13-year old daughter. Kounalaki went to the police to file a complaint and was told to stop writing “negative” reports on the party. They could not protect her, she says.
The Pan-Hellenic Police, in some cases, have also been accused of brutality against their own citizens and failing to convict those responsible for hate crimes targeting immigrants and undocumented migrants.
A July report by Amnesty International claims human rights abuses by Greek law enforcement include torture and other ill treatment during arrest or detention. The incidents, says the NGO, are not isolated.
Of the 63 cases of violence recorded by the Racist Violence Recording Network – an UNHCR initiative - over a three month period at the end of 2011, 18 were perpetrated by police officers whom the network claims “seem to act as members of extremist groups”.
The network noted that the incidents recorded were only a fraction of actual cases.
Europol, the EU’s police agency based in The Hague, noted in a report in April that growing concerns over austerity programmes combined with disillusion with mainstream politics may lead to an increase in violent right-wing activities.
“The threat of violent right-wing extremism has reached new levels in Europe and should not be underestimated,” said the report.

End brutalization of migrants and refugees in Greece

Petition Background (Preamble)
Short after the election of the contemporary Greek government on the 20th of June 2012, politicians and journalists started launching a contemporary “Witch Hunt” against immigrants, refugees and non occidental foreigners in Greece in general.

They had preannounced this so called "swiping operation", a term which in itself refers to undocumented migrants as human waste, as a means of putting the problem of irregular migration under control. The application of this policy implies an intensive policing of urban centres (mainly of Athens) with subsequent brutalization of thousands of Asian and African migrants during identifications, evacuations and arrests.

Undocumented persons that are getting arrested are being piled up in provisory deportation centres for an indefinite amount of time, with the aim to be expelled to unknown destinations. This strategy constitutes a crucial demonstration of power in the interior, in order to anticipate for the loss of international prestige of the country surmounted by depths and to win votes from smaller parties of the extreme right in favour of the current governmental coalition.

Its application managed to release in record time all kinds of reactionary forces supporting national cleansing within the daily public discourse. It moreover armed the hand of fascists to commit racist crime in broad daylight. This pogrom is currently carrying on and escalating further to the province, until "the total extinction of the problem of Bogus Migration", according to the prime minister's declaration. In the meantime, migrants and refugees survive in daily terror hiding and unable to fulfil the plainest daily functions in fear of brutalization.

Help us to put an end to this nightmare! Please, sign the underneath petition Petition: We as world citizens demand the ending of the current ruthless pogrom against migrants and refugees taking place in Greece on behalf of the authorities. We believe these policies of migration flows management to be by no means good practices, conducted on a basis of respect towards human rights. Instead, we find them to constitute an ecumenical disgrace for the degree and intensity of abuse they represent concerning all non occidental foreigners indiscriminately. Such legal, normalized violent practices rely on- and stoke neo-Nazi ideological foundations. This fact is proved both, by the rigid pace and extend of diffusion of nationalist & racial hate they legitimized in record time within the Greek society and by the voluntary contribution of neo-Nazi gangs alongside the interventions of formal repressive mechanisms for the purpose of this type of “country cleansing” (swiping operation) as the Greek government put it. We consider the trans-nomination of the overt brutalization of destitute individuals of non-Greek citizenship from police units to “Operation Xenios Zeus” [Hospitable Jupiter] a tragic irony, a reversal of historical and linguistic rationality that will mark from now on the values of the Modern Greek civilization. We denounce daily fascist and racist violence to be causes of criminality rise in contemporary Greece. We deny offering our silent support to this ongoing crime, in defence of our humanity, our youth and the future. Anthropo-Activity for One World

Offener Aufruf zur Teilnahme am Protestmarsch nach Berlin +Karte/A call to join the Protest March project to Berlin +Routes/

http://refugeetentaction.net

Schreibt Solidaritätserklärungen, organisiert Solidaritätsaktionen, schließt euch uns an.

A call to join the Protest March project to Berlin

The Refugees went for a new era of protest on March, 19th 2012 against the inhuman living circumstances and the dreadful asylum law in Germany. Right now there are
protestcamps in 9 cities in four different federal states. We’ll send you as an attachment the press declaration of the strikers announcing a protest march to Berlin in order to continue the protest alltogether.

Two different rallies will be on the way to Berlin. There will be a route for the bus which takes some more time and at the same time a march directly towards Berlin. Purpose of this protest form is to mobilize refugees living in Lagers to join in. After an intensive debate the coordinating committee and supporting groups decided to establish 5 workinggroups. Every group or individual who is willing to make this protest a success is invited to support us for the whole protest as well as for parts of this march. There are already some supporters but we still need everyone for succeeding in our big plans. The focused quantity will increase the protest’s quality, thus the collective character of the aim is on the shoulders of the alltogether of the participating and supporting groups, means all are responsible for this success. The workgroups will work on different areas of responsibility. To get a clearer picture we’ll introduce their tasks in the following part.

Communication work group:

  1. Start contacting groups and individuals in the cities which we’ll pass along our two routes to Berlin to activate local support. In the following we’ll give you a few examples. It is important to ensure the safety e.g. by having security guards furthermore solidarity is very welcome. The group has to write a list with of all active groups and individuals so that the logistic group can use this information and structures.
  2. Connect to lawyers who are familiar with the asylum laws or/and the rights of assembly – to solve problems quickly.

Logistic work group:

Refugees as well as activists form this group. This group is responsible to solve all logistical issues on both tracks.
  1. For this protest march we need different permissions – it has to be registered. We need places to rest; we need to hold local demonstrations… to ensure safety to all refugees this part is really important. Parts of the protest march can/should be registered by local groups.
  2. We need a car for all the material and baggage of the refugees as well as a caravan with a toilet… in case we can’t find a service area.
  3. Important things in both routes are:
    1. Places to sleep
    2. Tents and sleeping bags

Mediagroup

  1. Right now most of the journalists know the reasons for the refugees’ protest camps and spread the news in accordance to their press declarations. Since we need the truth to be published it is really important that we’ll take care of the presswork. We need a list of freelance journalists and press contacts to tell them new information. It is also important to initiate contact to Journalists which are interested in the refugee issues to join into the protest march to create a steady publicity.
One can find detailed information on our official website http://refugeetentaction.net . This website will be administered by refugees to publish their point of view. Therefore it’ll become the mouthpiece of the protest and should be spread.
Each involved group is welcome to write its own articles to spread the refugees protest. BE ACTIVE!!

  1. Furthermore there will be press conferences in different cities which have to be organised to ensure local press activities. Organise places for the press conferences, inform the local press and use your contacts!

Aufruf an alle Flüchtlinge – Call for all refugees –

-       Abschaffung aller Flüchtlingslager in Deutschland

more than 500 fascist attacks against migrants in the last six months

While the police is operating a huge sweep in Athens and Evros since August 2nd, racist attacks are getting more. Migrants communities speak of more than 500 hate crimes in the last six months and an organised wave of hate crimes in the last days.
The government assumes that these hate crimes are the try of extreme right wing groups to subvert the “organised” (and highly repressive) approach of government to deal with the migration issue in order to keep their political gains as they had in the last two elections due to their xenophobic agenda. Government officials commented that this reaction was foreseeable when the starting sweep operation set out to take away the main agenda of the fascist party GD. While the government warns the extreme right and announces to encounter hate crimes in a very strict manner, migrant communities complain about more than 500 racist attacks in the last six months and an ongoing apathy by the police who is not reacting.
The most recent victim was a young IRaqi refugee who fell victim to his attackers stabbing him close to the place of worship he was visiting in the month of Rhamazan. He had visited the place in the early morning around 4:30 in order to eat before sunrise. The attackers came on four motorbikes in front of the mosq and attacked the young man with knives. He died yesterday due to the severe injuries after the transfer to he hospital.
Migrants communities see a planed series of hate crimes within the last days. Last Thursday at 21:30 15-20 persons attacked another place of worship in Piraeus while there were 20 Pakistanis. ON Saturday night attacked two other mosqs in Reddi and Nikaia, Athens. In Crete in the night of Saturday there was a fight between a group of fascists and migrants from Pakistan that evolved out of provocative comments by the first. The fight ended in the arrest of one Greek who had beaten an Pakistani badly on his head and a Pakistani who was lacking legal papers. Five days ago four unknown persons attacked some Indian migrants in Rethimno, Crete, stabbing them with knives. One week ago a similar incident was registered in Likovrisi. The victim is still hospitalized after the severe injuries inflicted to him.
In the police press release they refer amongst others to a hate crime on June 12 against Egyptian fishermen in Perama, the stabbing of migrants in Neos Kosmos by a group with motorbikes, an attack with metal globs against Pakistani workers in chalikida, the pogrom against migrants in Likovrisi by mid June and some other attacks in Nikaia. In most of the cases the perpetrators were not yet identified and arrested.
At the same time, the fascist party GD is preparing meetings all over the country in order to “map” the “problems” fascist Greek people have with Roma and Sinti and with migrants. The aim is to then “clean” the areas from the “problematic” population as GD has already done in some areas of Athens such as Agios Panteleimonas and Attiki Square. Fascist attacks might lead to vendetta like situations in the smaller towns of Greece and other severe hate crimes at places of agglomeration i.e. during the feast of Eid by the end of Ramazan.

Greece must bring an end to racist and xenophobic attacks

The Greek authorities must do more to prevent racist and xenophobic attacks and fully investigate those that occur, Amnesty International said following the fatal stabbing of an Iraqi man amid a rise in xenophobic attacks.

The 19-year-old died in hospital on Sunday after being repeatedly stabbed near an unofficial mosque in Anaxagora Street in central Athens by a gang of five people riding four motorcycles, police officials said.

The gang had earlier tried to assault a Romanian and a Moroccan national before the attack, but the pair managed to escape, witnesses told police.

“Such attacks are unacceptable and the authorities must do all within their power to stem their rise,” said Jezerca Tigani, Deputy Europe and Central Asia Programme Director at Amnesty International.

Attacks by unidentified groups and individuals against foreign nationals and places of worship have also been reported in the past week in Athens, Pireus, Crete and other towns.

In one attack last Thursday in Pireus, flares were reportedly thrown into a prayer room for Muslim worshippers by some 15 members of an extreme right-wing group riding motorcycles as 10 migrants were praying inside.

There are no official mosques in Greece. Muslim worshippers pray in rooms, flats, warehouses, and any space that can be turned into a praying room. So far, plans to build official mosques have failed.

Two Pakistani nationals were taken to hospital after being beaten by a group of unknown men who entered their house in Vonitsa in Western Greece last Sunday evening.

Two Egyptian nationals also told the organization in July that they were attacked by around 20 members of an extreme right-wing group as they slept in a house in Pireus with four fellow nationals. One of the two men, a young fisherman, had to have two operations on his face and remained in hospital for days after the incident. Five men and a woman were arrested after the attack.

“The number of attacks is worrying and it shows how much rage and hate there is in the society. It is time for the Greek society to stand up against such shameful attacks and reassert its condemnation of racial and ethnic hatred,” said Jezerca Tigani.

The attack against the Iraqi man on Sunday came days after Amnesty International called on the Greek authorities to halt a police crackdown launched last week on “irregular immigrants”, in which more than 8,000 foreign nationals were arrested in the Greek capital. Of those, 1,660 individuals were found to be without official documentation and were placed in administrative detention, according to Greek police today.

“Recent police operations against immigrants have raised serious concerns that people may be discriminated against on the basis of their perceived ethnicity, and such actions fuel xenophobic sentiment.”

Amnesty International, while recognizing the Greek authorities’ right to control immigration, has previously stated they “do not have the right to treat people in the street like criminals purely because of the colour of their skin".

“Greek authorities must prioritize and build up the confidence of minorities and foreign nationals in the ability of the authorities to protect them from the threat of racist violence by sending a strong message to all those who carry out these attacks – they will not be tolerated and will be fully and vigorously investigated, with perpetrators brought to justice,” said Jezerca Tigani.
