Ioannina, Greece: “Cleansing” operation against migrants

At around 7 AM GMT+2 on Saturday, May 26th, a large police contingent surrounded the building complex of the former Chatzikosta Hospital, located on central Papandreou Avenue in the city of Ioannina. This complex, apart from being a temporary home for migrants and refugees, is also were the Antiviosi squat is located.

Various anti-riot squads, including some from other cities, as well as fire fighter units and municipal utility workers sealed the entrances to the complex under the orders of mayor Filippas Filios, the governor of the region of Epirus Alexandros Kachrimanis, the director of Chatzikosta Hospital Fotis Vavvas, and in the presence of a prosecutor.
The climate preceding the repression was prepared by the local far-right newspaper Proinos Logos and the television station TV1, which systematically promote the neo-Nazi and xenophobic discourse of Golden Dawn candidate Christos Pappas. Under the slogan of cleaning the “health bomb”—supposedly presented by the migrants—the local authorities, the prosecution authorities, cops, neo-Nazis, and the bastard snitches of the local media have launched a veritable manhunt against undocumented migrants. This repression wave in Ioannina comes a few days after the pogroms and neo-Nazi riots in the Peiraiki–Patraiki ex-factory in the city of Patras.
As reported live by the rebel Autonomous Radio of Ioannina, there have thus far been two detentions and searches of comrades (short after, police let them go at the spot), while an antifascist demonstration in support of the migrants has been taking place in front of the City Hall of Ioannina since 10:00. At the same time, other groups of comrades are remaining in the Antiviosi squat, ready to resist any attempt by the cops to attack it.
While the city council workers continue to seal the entrances to the former hospital, other forces of repression moved in the direction of the old military prisons, located on Gennimata Avenue, looking for undocumented migrants who may have sought refuge there because, thus far, the cops have not been able to arrest anyone. This complex was supposed to be evacuated and sealed off as well, but we still wait for confirmation (there are neither police squads, nor migrants there as of 13:00).
Despite the authorities’ “cleansing” operation, amidst a ruthless campaign ahead of June 17th repeat elections, no migrant was caught inside the aforementioned buildings, while our comrades and other antifascist supporters still safeguard the Antiviosi squat. Nevertheless, a total of 30 migrants (apparently, with and without papers) have been detained across the city, even with police raids in migrants’ residences

افراط گرایان یونان در صدد شکار مهاجران

راست گرایان افراطی یونان که تازه تقویت شده اند، می خواهند احساسات مردم را علیه مهاجران تحریک کنند. در غرب یونان زد و خوردهای گسترده یی میان افراط گرایان و مهاجران صورت گرفته است.

افراط گرایان دست راستی شب چهار شنبه تظاهرات کردند و می خواستند در انتقام به مرگ خشونتبار یک یونانی، بر مهاجران حمله کنند. پولیس برای متفرق کردن آنها از گاز اشک آور استفاده کرد.

تظاهرکنندگان در شهر پاتراس واقع در غرب یونان در پیش روی کارخانه متروکی که مهاجران به عنوان سرپناه استفاده می کنند، تجمع کرده بودند. هدف تظاهرکنندگان این بود تا صدها مهاجری را که به امید سفر توسط کشتی به ایتالیا در این ساختمان منتظر اند، مورد حمله قرار دهند.

اعضای خشمگین حزب دست راستی افراطی موسوم به "فجر طلایی" و همفکران شان کوشیدند تا موانعی را که پولیس در برابر این کارخانه نساجی قدیمی ایجاد کرده بود، بردارند.

تظاهرکنندگان بر نیروهای امنیتی که برای محافظت از خارجیان در پیش روی این فابریکه توظیف شده بودند، سنگ پرتاب کردند. پولیس در واکنش از گاز اشک آور استفاده کرد. چندین تن مواد زباله در این تظاهرات به آتش کشیده شد.

بحران اقتصادی و نفرت از خارجی ها

تظاهرکنندگان می خواستند که بر مهاجران حمله کنند، اما پولیس مانع آنها شد.

پس از وخیم شدن وضعیت اقتصادی در کشور بسیار مقروض یونان، در ماه های گذشته حملات علیه خارجی ها افزایش یافته است. حزب "فجر طلایی" در نتیجه انتخابات پارلمانی ششم ماه می، برای نخستین بار توانست وارد پارلمان شود. این حزب هفت درصد آرا را به دست آورد و اعلام کرده است که می خواهد مهاجران غیرقانونی را از یونان بیرون کند.

برای بسیاری مهاجران غیرقانونی، یونان نخستین کشور اتحادیه اروپا در راه سفر شان به غرب می باشد. مطابق به قوانین اتحادیه اروپا، مهاجران در همان کشوری که ابتدا رسیده اند، می توانند درخواست پناهندگی بدهند. شهر بندری پاتراس نقطه تجمع چندین هزار مهاجر است که در تلاش رفتن به ایتالیا هستند.

مطابق به آمار رسمی، در سه ماه اول سال 2012 میلادی 18700 مهاجر به یونان آمده اند. از این جمله 4000 نفر آن ها افغان می باشند. جمعاً در دو سال گذشته از ورود 230 هزار مهاجر غیرقانونی جلوگیری شده است. در مجموع در یونان بیش از یک میلیون مهاجر زندگی می کنند. این در حالی است که جمعیت خود یونان 11.5 میلیون نفر می باشد.

Patras: Clashes as Residents & Chysi Avgi Supporters Try to Storm Immigrants Shelter

Angry residents of Patras, in North-Western Peloponnese, and supporters of extreme-right Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) tried to storm an old factory where dozens of immigrants take shelter. Local media report of five people injured as protesters clashed with police, with the one side hurling stones and wooden sticks and the other firing tear gas. Among the injured are two policemen  who were attacked with wooden sticks, and one GD member.

For a second day, Patras residents and GD supporters fathered outside the old factory of Piraiki-Patraiki to protest the fatal injury of  30-year old Thanasi Lazanas by three immigrants of Afghan origin.

Late on Tuesday afternoon, 200 residents and GD supporters tried to storm the old factory. Police was on the ground and soon the clashed between the protesters and and police started.

Unconfirmed report claim that a group of GD attacked a policeman on a motorcycle, the response by the police was immediate.

Latest reports from the area say that a group of residents attempted to enter the factory with a bulldozer.

Local  news portal dete.gr reported that Chrysi Avgi-MP Michalis Arvanitidis was attacked by a group of  some 30 young people while he was leaving the studio of local Super B television together with one journalist. Arvanitids has been punched in the face, while the attackers tore his clothes.

Residents of the Greek port city call for a solution to immigration problem.

Thanasis Lazanas was found heavily wounded near his home in Ities village at dawn on Saturday. He was stabbed at least 6 times with a knife in the chest and ribs. He was transmitted to the hospital but he died due to the heavy injuries. One Afghan man was arrested by the police.

Hospital doctors announce decision to ignore the Ministry of Health directive and to continue treating undocumented migrants

Prior to the May 6th elections, the minister of health, Loverdos, announced undocumented migrants were to no longer receive any treatment in public hospitals in Greece. In response, hospital doctors issued, through their union body, the following statement

Doctors: “We will treat undocumented migrants. No to Loverdos’ credentials to the [Nazis of the] Golden Dawn!”

The decision of the Minister of Health [at the time] Andreas Loverdos to ban the treatment of those who are illegally in the country, with the exception of emergencies, has caused havoc in the medical community.

Hospital doctors decided to ignore the order by Loverdos, accusing him in turn that with this order he tries to give his …credentials to the supporters of the [Nazi] Golden Dawn.

After the decision of their union (OENGE), doctors will continue to treat undocumented migrants as normal. In an issued statement, OENGE says: “hospital doctors declare, for an n-th time, to the impenitent minister of health, that they shall not renounce their medical profession and turn themselves to guards of humans instead, that they shall not concern themselves with the skin color, the gender, the origin and legalising documents of any human requiring examination and treatment”.

The head of the OENGE, Dimitris Varnavas, clarifies in some stark words: “If Mr Loverdos wishes to satisfy his political obsessions or give his credentials to the supporters of the Golden Dawn, he has the capacity do so in any ways -not, however, by exploiting the professional responsibility and dignity of hospital doctors.

We announce, therefore, that we shall completely ignore the recent, pre-electoral instructions by Mr. Loverdos and that we shall continue practicing the medical profession as commandeered by our oath and medical conduct”.

Καλλιθέα: δεν θα περάσει ο φασισμός!

Στην Καλλιθέα η δράση των φασιστών κλιμακώθηκε μετά την είσοδο της Χρυσής Αυγής στη βουλή.

Το βράδυ της Τρίτης 8 Μαΐου συμμορία 15 περίπου φασιστών επιτέθηκαν σε μετανάστες χτυπώντας τους με σιδερολοστούς, σιδερογροθιές και αλυσίδες. Τρεις μετανάστες μεταφέρθηκαν στο νοσοκομείο σοβαρά χτυπημένοι. Πρέπει να επισημανθεί, ότι η επίθεση έγινε υπό το βλέμμα της αστυνομίας και μετά την έξοδο των μεταναστών από το αστυνομικό τμήμα, στο οποίο είχαν προσαχθεί για έλεγχο στοιχείων.

Η επίθεση αυτή δεν αποτελεί ένα μεμονωμένο γεγονός. Τα ξημερώματα της Πέμπτης 10 Μαΐου ομάδα φασιστών επιτέθηκε με εμπρηστικούς μηχανισμούς σε σπίτια που διαμένουν μετανάστες, στο κέντρο της Καλλιθέας, προσπαθώντας να τα κάψει, μαζί με τους ενοίκους τους, οι οποίοι εκείνη την ώρα κοιμούνταν μέσα.

Την Παρασκευή 11 Μαΐου μία συμμορία τριάντα περίπου φασιστών επιτέθηκε σε μετανάστες στην πλατεία Κύπρου, στέλνοντας έναν άνθρωπο στο νοσοκομείο με σοβαρά χτυπήματα στο κεφάλι και στο σώμα. Η επίθεση έγινε μπροστά στα μάτια πολλών δεκάδων Καλλιθεατών οι οποίοι εκείνη την ώρα βρισκόταν στην πλατεία.

Καθημερινά στους δρόμους και τις γειτονιές της Καλλιθέας πραγματοποιούνται παρόμοιες επιθέσεις. Μετανάστες και Έλληνες, μαθητές, και αγωνιστές του κινήματος δέχονται επιθέσεις από τις φασιστικές συμμορίες.

Η δράση των φασιστών στην περιοχή ξεκινάει από τον Μάιο του 2011, με την πυρπόληση δύο μουσουλμανικών χώρων λατρείας. Η κλιμάκωσή της όμως και η ένταση των επιθέσεων την τελευταία εβδομάδα, έφερε ξαφνικά ολόκληρη την κοινότητα των μεταναστών αντιμέτωπη με τη φασιστική βία. Οι μετανάστες (κυρίως οι Αιγύπτιοι που αποτελούν την μεγαλύτερη μεταναστευτική κοινότητα) αποφάσισαν να αντιδράσουν. Αποφάσισαν μόνοι τους να συγκεντρωθούν στην πλατεία Κύπρου, όπου γίνονται και οι περισσότερες επιθέσεις, για να αποτρέψουν φασιστικές επιθέσεις. Η “Πρωτοβουλία ενάντια στο φασισμό και τη ρατσιστική βία” ήρθε σε επαφή μαζί τους και αποφάσισε να μετατρέψει τη συγκέντρωση των μεταναστών που έγινε το Σάββατο 12 Μαΐου σε αντιφασιστική συγκέντρωση καλώντας και άλλες κινηματικές και πολιτικές συλλογικότητες να την στηρίξουν. Τριακόσια περίπου άτομα, στην πλειοψηφία τους μετανάστες συγκεντρώθηκαν στην πλατεία και στη συνέχεια έκαναν διαδήλωση μέχρι την κεντρική πλατεία της Νέας Σμύρνης.

Η κινητοποίηση της αστυνομίας ήταν πρωτοφανής για την περιοχή. Η αστυνομία δεν έχει κάνει το οτιδήποτε για να συλλάβει τους Χρυσαυγίτες τραμπούκους αλλά έσπευσε με τέσσερις (!) τουλάχιστον διμοιρίες ΜΑΤ (και δεκάδες της ομάδας ΔΕΛΤΑ) να τρομοκρατήσει τους μετανάστες και αντιφασίστες πολίτες. Για άλλη μια φορά αποδεικνύεται ότι η ίδια η αστυνομία έχει μετατραπεί σε σφηκοφωλιά Ναζιστών οπαδών της Χρυσής Αυγής. Όπως άλλωστε έχει αποκαλύψει η εφημερίδα Το Βήμα «ένας στους δύο αστυνομικούς ψήφισαν “Χρυσή Αυγή”»[1]:

«Στα περισσότερα από τα τμήματα στα οποία ψηφίζουν οι αστυνομικοί -όπως κι άλλοι πολίτες- το ποσοστό της «Χρυσής Αυγής» κυμαίνεται από 19-24% κι είναι το μεγαλύτερο που παρατηρείται σε ολόκληρη την πρωτεύουσα. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι η οργάνωση σε περιοχές όπως ο Αγιος Παντελεήμονας ή η Κυψέλη, όπου θεωρείται ότι έχει ισχυρά ερείσματα, συγκεντρώνει ποσοστό από 15 έως 18%!

Η ανάλυση των ψήφων που έλαβε η «Χρυσή Αυγή» σε 11 εκλογικά τμήματα της Α΄ Αθηνών είναι εντυπωσιακή. Σ΄αυτά ψηφίζουν – με βάση ειδικούς εκλογικούς καταλόγους- χιλιάδες αστυνομικοί που υπηρετούν στην Γενική Αστυνομική Διεύθυνση Αττικής και σε υπηρεσίες όπως η Άμεση Δράση, η ΔΙΑΣ, η Ασφάλεια Αττικής κι άλλες. Τα τμήματα αυτά- από το 806 ως και το 816 εκλογικό τμήμα-,βρίσκονται στα σχολικά συγκροτήματα στην οδό Αμπελακίων 24 και στην οδό Πανόρμου, κοντά στην έδρα του Μεγάρου της ΕΛ.ΑΣ, στη Λεωφόρο Αλεξάνδρας.

Στα εν λόγω τμήματα η «Χρυσή Αυγή» έρχεται πρώτο κόμμα και το ποσοστό της κυμαίνεται από 18,64% (στο 813ο εκλογικό τμήμα) έως 23,67% (στο 816ο εκλογικό τμήμα). Επιπλέον η «Χρυσή Αυγή» έλαβε ποσοστά 23,08% στο 811ο εκλογικό τμήμα, 22,7% στο 808ο εκλογικό τμήμα και 22,2 στο 806ο.

Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι λίγες εκατοντάδες μέτρα πιο κάτω σε εκλογικά τμήματα της οδού Τσόχα, όπου δεν ψηφίζουν οι αστυνομικοί, το ποσοστό της «Χρυσής Αυγής» πέφτει στο 12-14%. Αν συνυπολογισθεί ότι κατά μέσο όρο σε κάθε ένα από αυτά τα τμήματα, όπως προκύπτει εξάλλου και από τους εκλογικούς καταλόγους, ψηφίζουν περίπου 550-700 άτομα κι ο αριθμός των αστυνομικών που ψηφίζουν σ΄αυτά κυμαίνεται από 20% ως 30% επί του συνόλου των ψηφισάντων, τότε με την σχετική αναγωγή το ποσοστό των αστυνομικών που ψηφίζουν «Χρυσή Αυγή» κινείται μεταξύ του του 45% και του 59%».

Όταν το ΠΑΣΟΚ υπό τον Ανδρέα Παπανδρέου για πρώτη φορά το 1981 σχημάτιζε κυβέρνηση, παρελάμβανε και μια αστυνομία στην οποία υπήρχαν «χουντικά σταγονίδια» σύμφωνα με την πολιτική «αργκό» εκείνης της εποχής. Τότε πράγματι είχε επέλθει ένας (σχετικός) εκδημοκρατισμός της αστυνομίας. Το σημερινό ΠΑΣΟΚ που «πλέον έχει σαπίσει» (κατά δήλωση του ίδιου του Ευάγγελου Βενιζέλου[2]) κληροδοτεί στην ελληνική κοινωνία μια κατά πολύ χειρότερη αστυνομία από εκείνη που παρέλαβε το 1981. Τα «χουντικά σταγονίδια» έχουν μετατραπεί σε ναζιστικούς πυρήνες εντός του αστυνομικού σώματος. Τα νεοφιλελεύθερα πρωτοπαλίκαρα, Γιώργος Παπανδρέου, Ευάγγελος Βενιζέλος , Μιχάλης Χρυσοχοΐδης, Ανδρέας Λοβέρδος, φρόντισαν και δημιούργησαν μια εξαιρετικά επικίνδυνη αστυνομία για τις δημοκρατικές ελευθερίες των πολιτών. Το γεγονός αυτό πρέπει να σημάνει συναγερμό στην Αριστερά και σε κάθε δημοκρατικό πολίτη.

Η αποθέωση της Χρυσαυγίτικης συμπεριφοράς της αστυνομίας χτες στην Καλλιθέα ήταν, μετά τη λήξη της διαδήλωσης, όταν τα ΜΑΤ περικύκλωσαν τους μετανάστες που αποχωρούσαν για να τους συλλάβουν! Με παρέμβαση των μελών της Πρωτοβουλίας και των άλλων συλλογικοτήτων τελικά αποτράπηκαν οι συλλήψεις.

Παρά την αστυνομική-ναζιστική τρομοκρατία οι μετανάστες δεν φοβήθηκαν! Θα σας πω κάτι που δείχνει το εκπληκτικό θάρρος αυτών των ανθρώπων.

Προσέξτε:

Αντιμετωπίζουν φασίστες δολοφόνους και ταυτόχρονα μπάτσους φασιστικής νοοτροπίας. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, την ίδια στιγμή που οι διώκτες τους κρύβονται είτε στα βρώμικα σώβρακα των ΜΑΤ (οι Χρυσαυγίτες) είτε κάτω από τις επίσημες στολές της ελληνικής αστυνομίας, οι μετανάστες και οι μετανάστριες της διαδήλωσης της Καλλιθέας μου επέτρεπαν να τους φωτογραφίζω. Και όχι μόνο:

Όταν τους επεσήμανα ενδεχομένους κινδύνους μου δήλωναν ότι δεν έχουν κανένα πρόβλημα να κυκλοφορήσουν στο διαδίκτυο οι φωτογραφίες τους γιατί «δεν φοβούνται κανέναν»! Μου ζητούσαν επίμονα τη διεύθυνση του διαδικτύου που θα δημοσιευτούν οι φωτογραφίες τους, ανυπομονώντας να τις δουν. Οι διώκτες τέτοιας ποιότητας ανθρώπων είναι δειλά ανθρωπάρια, που κρύβονται πίσω από κουκούλες και τα ΜΑΤ. Οι διώκτες τους είναι άνθρωποι των υπονόμων.

Οι μετανάστες αδελφοί μας δίνουν μαθήματα θάρρους και ήθους σε μας τους ιθαγενείς Έλληνες. Πρόκειται για τους ίδιους ανθρώπους που σε ολόκληρο τον αραβικό κόσμο ανέτρεψαν αιμοσταγείς δικτάτορες. Αν υπάρχουν κάποιοι που πρέπει να φοβούνται τόσο θαρραλέους ανθρώπους είναι τα δειλά ανθρωπάρια, οι Ναζί.

Η κινητοποίηση των μεταναστών, η οργή τους και η αποφασιστικότητά τους, καθιστούν σαφές, ότι αυτό το τμήμα της εργατικής τάξης αποτελεί ένα βασικό κομμάτι της σύγκρουσης ενάντια στο φασισμό. Και επιτέλους, όπως αποδείχθηκε και στις τελευταίες εκλογές, η Αριστερά αποτελεί πλέον πλειοψηφικό ρεύμα στην ελληνική κοινωνία. Όλοι μαζί στην Αριστερά, ενωμένοι σαν μια γροθιά, ας ξαναστείλουμε τα ναζιστικά αποβράσματα εκεί όπου ανήκουν:

پایان کنفرانس ژنو در مورد پناهندگان افغان در ایران

در ژنو سویس، کنفرانس دوروزه برای بررسی وضعیت مهاجران افغان در کشورهای همسایه و
بازگرداندن آنها به کشورشان به پایان رسید. در بیانیه مشترکی که منتشر شد آمده که حدود سه میلیون افغانی که در ایران و پاکستان زندگی می کنند باید تشویق شوند که به افغانستان برگردند و زمینه زندگی و کار آنها در کشورشان هم باید مهیا شود. از آنتونیو گوترش، کمیسر عالی سازمان ملل درامور پناهندگان پرسیدم بسیاری از افغانهایی که به کشورشان برگشته اند با استانداردی پایین تر از دیگر هموطنانشان زندگی می کنند. چرا باید بقیه افغانها برگردانده شوند؟

پناهجویان افغان به اعتصاب خود پایان دادند

رضا افشار، یکی از اعتصاب کنندگان به رادیو آلمان گفت که 220 پناهجوی افغان به اعتصاب غذای خود پایان داده اند. او توضیح داد که پس از حضور غلام سخی غیرت، سفیر افغانستان در اندونیزیا این افراد دست از اعتصاب غذا کشیدند.

بیش از 200 مهاجر افغان در جزیره "تونجانگ پینانک" اندونیزیا که از روز سه شنبه هفته گذشته دست به اعتصاب غذا زده بودند، اعتصاب خود را شکستند. این افراد در اعتراض به شرایط نامناسب زندگی شان در بازداشتگاه و عدم رسیدگی به پرونده های شان، دست به اعتصاب غذا زده بودند.
گفته می شود که تا روز جمعه حدود40 تن از این پناهجویان به دلیل وضعیت نامناسب صحی شان به شفاخانه انتقال داده شدند.
این پناهندگان هشدار داده بودند تا زمانی که به پرونده های آنان از سوی این اداره ملل متحد به صورت جدی رسیدگی نشود، به اعتصاب غذایی خود ادامه می دهند؛ اما در پی حضور سفیر افغانستان آنها دست از اعتصاب کشیدند.

سالانه صدها پناهجوی افغان به طور غیرقانونی و با قایق به آسترالیا سفر می کنند.

پیش از این دفتر "کمیساریای عالی ملل متحد در امور پناهندگان" در جاکارتا، پایتخت اندونیزیا به دویچه وله گفته بود که هیاتی از سوی این اداره برای گفتگو با پناهجویان در حال اعتصاب به این اردوگاه رفته و پناهجویان پس از نشست باهیات به اعتصاب غذایی شان پایان داده اند.
پناهجویان معترض می گویند ماه ها است که در این اردوگاه به سر می برند و تاکنون وضعیت پرونده های آنان از سوی "کمیساریای عالی ملل متحد در امور پناهندگان" بررسی نشده است.
رضا افشار، در مورد وضعیت پناهجویان می گوید: "این جا اردوگاه پناهندگان نیست، این جا زندان است. با ما مثل زندانی برخورد می شود. ما حتی ماهی یک بار هم از نور آفتاب بهره مند نمی شویم. پولیس نظارت بر مهاجرین طوری با ما برخورد می کند که گویا ما مجرم هستیم".
سفیر افغانستان در اندونیزیا در رابطه با مشکلات پناهجویان گفت: "سفارت افغانستان با نماینده سفارت آمریکا در جاکارتا در این رابطه صحبت کرده است و قرار است به زودی نشستی میان سفارت های افغانستان، آسترالیا وامریکا با اشتراک نمایندگان کمیساریای عالی ملل متحد در امور پناهندگان و اداره مهاجرت بین المللی برگزار شود تا به مشکلات پناهجویان افغان رسیدگی گردد".
اندونیزیا به خاطر نزدیک بودن به آسترالیا و داشتن راه های آبی آزاد یکی ازمسیرهای اصلی قاچاق انسان به آسترالیا است. سالانه صدها پناهجو از افغانستان به طور غیرقانونی به آسترالیا سفر می کنند.

Three People Dead While Trying to Escape FRONTEX Control

Three people found a horrible death and  four were seriously injured after the car they were in got fire while trying to escape a FRONTEX control.  Greek media report that local police for Illegal Immigration Enforcement and members of the European agency for the security of external EU borders FRONTEX had spotted a car transporting illegal immigrants. The officers followed the car and cut its way in an attempt to stop it for inspection.
However the driver of the immigrants car tried to overtake the FRONTEX vehicle, lost control with the effect that the car overturned in a nearby field. The car got immediately fire.
Two immigrants and the driver were burned and died on the spot, while four others were seriously injured.
The tragedy occurred at the Lykofis village near the Evros borders between Greece and Turkey.

First migrant detention center opens despite protests

A detention center for undocumented immigrants in Amygdaleza, northwest of Athens, started operating on Sunday, despite vehement protests by local residents and rights groups, with the transfer of dozens of migrants detained over the past few days in police sweeps in central Athens.
Police said they transfered a group of 56 migrants in the early afternoon and were to move another 164 into the compound late last night.
Meanwhile residents staged a protest against the center outside the police training school which is adjacent to the facility.
According to Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, a total of 1,200 migrants are to be moved into the center until mid-May. Then additional centers are to open in different parts of the country, according to the minister, who insists that this project will solve Greece’s problem with illegal immigration.
The minister noted, in a posting on his Twitter account yesterday, that the opening of the first facility was a success. “With Amygdaleza we have proven that a government can and should work even a few days before elections,” he said. In a separate posting on Facebook he expressed conviction that local residents would accept the center once they see how it operates.
Last week the minister had brushed off objections of local residents to the project, noting that security concerns were not an issue due to the proximity of the police training school to the facility.
In a related development, a spokeswoman for the Doctors Without Borders aid group complained about the health checks being conducted by joint teams of police officers and health officials on undocumented immigrants living in crowded apartments in central Athens. “Public health cannot be safeguarded through police-led inspections and through scaremongering,” the head of the group’s Greek office, Reveka Papadopoulou, said.
