Insurgents' efforts to target defence minister and calls for
his resignation are alike, a top official in Afghan Defence Ministry
said on Wednesday.
Yesterday Afghan senators urged Defence Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak to step down.
The call for resignation came a day after an assailant in army uniform who had infiltrated into the ministry opened fire killing two soldiers and wounding 7 others.
Senators said Mr Wardak has failed to provide enough security to the country.
Defence Ministry has also accepted that it fell short to prevent the assailant.
"Terrorists, al-Qaeda and some outside circles are behind this incident and they want to kill defence minister and at the same time some of our friends urged his removal," Defence Ministry Spokesperson Gen. Zaher Azimi.
Gen. Azimi said investigations have been launched into the attack mainly focusing on how the attacker made it inside the ministry compound.
Blotz said in the past two months 98 million dollars have been spent on renovation and construction of security institutions.
