Declaration of solidarity with the hunger strikers in Greece – Legalisation and equal rights now – Call for a week of action .

The 25th of January is the day on which 300 migrants in Greece started a hunger strike. Their demand is a collective legalisation of all the people excluded from Greek society based on their status – be it asylum seekers, not recognised refugees, illegalised people, exploited migrant labourers. It is not the first hunger strike in Greece where human beings are forced to use such a drastic measure to fight for their rights.

We are migrant men and women from all over Greece. We came here due to poverty, unemployment, wars and dictatorships. The multinational companies and their political servants did not leave another choice for us than risking 10 times our lives to arrive in Europe’s door. […] We came to Greece and we are working to support ourselves and our families. We live without dignity, in the darkness of illegalness so that employers and state’s services can benefit from the harsh exploitation of our labour. We live from our sweat and with the dream, some day, to have equal rights with our Greek fellow workers. […] The answer to the lies and the cruelty has to be given now and it will come from us, from migrant men and women. We are going in the front line, with our own lives to stop this injustice. We ask the legalization of all migrant men and women, we ask for equal political and social rights and obligations with Greek workers.
(Assembly of migrant hunger strikers, January 2011)
It is not a particular Greek situation that the hunger strikers are denouncing. It is the effect of the European policy of bordering and exclusion. Accessing European territory is often a deadly venture. Refugees and migrants are not welcome in Europe, and fences, border guards and agencies, detention camps and deportation schemes have proliferated only to keep the unwanted at distance. But the dreams and the desires of the unwanted are stronger and enable many to scale the borders. The presence of a migrant population in Europe is a reality and they have come, and are coming to stay.
However, it is not only the fences and borders that are directed against these coming citizens of Europe. In a Europe that promised a homogeneous landscape of rights to its citizens in any country of the Union, non-European migrants often find themselves to be second-class citizens, or even outright excluded from political and social rights at large. This creates an exploitable labour force and a disadvantaged and disenfranchised part of the population. By creating such conditions, Europe profits from the products of migrant labour. In the Southern countries of the EU, the agricultural sector is heavily dependent on migrant labour, while all over Europe, migrants form the backbone of many service industries that are taken for granted.
But we are talking about human beings, with dreams and hopes, with plenty of reasons to go and to move. But as they arrive in Europe, they find themselves deprived of their rights as human beings, at the mercy of an asylum system, and at the fringes of society. It is exactly this social exclusion and disfranchisement, it is the lack of political and social rights that leads to the often unbearable conditions that are then denounced as the “migration problem”, used to justify repression, further exclusion, and deportation.
Migration is neither a crime nor a problem, but the European Union’s response is criminal and highly problematic. The 2008 European Pact on Immigration and Asylum has cemented this inhuman policy pursued for many years. While mentioning necessary advances in asylum and legal migration legislation, it has foremost served as a political initiative to harden the borders, further exclusion and deportation and is a declaration of war on migration. It lengthily talks about the solidarity between the EU member states, but it robbed especially the southern states of the only sensible answer to migration: it contains an explicit ban on collective legalisation.
The hunger strikers in Greece have decided to struggle for their rights, and rightly so. In a climate of increased repression and anti-migrant rhetoric, we have to act. Not only in Greece, all over Europe and indeed all over the world, we need to struggle for equal rights for everybody. We express our explicit solidarity with the hunger strikers in Greece, and we call to activists all over Europe to join the cause for a complete and unconditional legalisation.
We call for a week of action from the 7th to the 13th of February 2011 in solidarity with the hunger strikers!
Legalisation now!
Equal rights now!
For the abolition of borders!

Communication Initiative Soldarity-25/01

As became clear in the press (25-01), the Solidarity Initiative support fair and democratic struggle organized adiamesolavita immigrants themselves. The struggle of the immigrants that are currently being renovated old building of the Law, the race is 300 employees work for years without any social and labor rights. The historical building of the Faculty, who do not use this space for educational processes is an area that has hosted in the past, significant and equitable social struggles, a place of asylum for those fighting for justice and dignity, which provide medical and legal support and safeguard policy on strikers. The struggle of the 300 hunger strikers is just and must win. It is struggle of all working! We meet their demands to stop the massive aponomimopoiiseis the disgrace of expulsion, extortion in connection with the residence permit pasting stamps, we politka and equal social rights for all. It is time to end the apartheid against hundreds of thousands of people who live, move, work and raise their children in this country. The impoverishment of a section of society and foreshadows the misery of others. And for this, we can only stand in solidarity with the hunger strikers. On the insistence of the media and political forces led to talk about race - they are unhappy people who are not found in the Law there accidentally. They were led and guided Anna Diamantopoulou, we knew that racism is hard to let them accept that immigrants are not fragile objects, but fighters who take responsibility for their lives. As with the perseverance to deal with is the part where the hunger strike, rather than the substance of his claims that law and fight against political exclusion, division and exclusion rights of everyone, has already installed more than another: "Gentlemen, you have to face the minimum heckler who sit on the stairs, through to the close of higher educational institutions and practitioners on psychologikin violence of the overwhelming majority of Greek students were not allowed to come in her room and watch the lesson . If you think that you need help, we will ask ments in writing.

[300] Hunger strike to start tomorrow

Short Update on the upcoming Hunger Strike for Legalisation in Greece. First of all, there is a new blog that will cover the hunger strike in Greek language: hungerstrike300.espivblogs.net. We will try to get as much content as possible translated on this site. You can follow all updates in this category: hungerstrike300 (rss).
So much for the technicalities. In the meanwhile, about 300 hunger strikers have arrived from Chania, Crete to join the other hunger strikers in Athens and Thessaloniki. Here is a video of their arrival in the port of Patra

The hunger strike will start tomorrow

Yesterday (21st of January 2011) was a bad day for the Dublin II system. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg judged Belgium and Greece for violating European Convention on Human Rights.
In the case MSS v Belgium and Greece an Afghan asylum seeker appealed against his deportion from Belgium to Greece based on the Dublin II-Regulation, that was carried out in June 2009. Subject of the proceedings were article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment), article 13 (right to an effective remedy) as well as article 2 (right to life).
Below you will find an extract of the decision. Within the next days we will post more information, including how this judgement could effect the future of Dublin II-Regulation.
A violation of Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment) of the European Convention on Human Rights by Greece both because of the applicant’s detention conditions and because of his living conditions in Greece;
A violation of Article 13 (right to an effective remedy) taken together with Article 3 by Greece because of the deficiencies in the asylum procedure followed in the applicant’s case;
A violation of Article 3 by Belgium both because of having exposed the applicant to risks linked to the deficiencies in the asylum procedure in Greece and because of having exposed him to detention and living conditions in Greece that were in breach of Article 3;
A violation of Article 13 taken together with Article 3 by Belgium because of the lack of an effective remedy against the applicant’s expulsion order
25th of January 300 migrants will go on hunger strike in Greece

Announcement by the Assembly of Migrant Hunger Strikers
We are migrant men and women from all over Greece. We came here due to poverty, unemployment, wars and dictatorships. The multinational companies and their political servants did not leave another choice for us than risking 10 times our lives to arrive in Europe’s door. The West that is depriving our countries while having much better living conditions is our only chance to live as humans. We came (either with regular entry or not) in Greece and we are working to support ourselves and our families. We live without dignity, in the darkness of illegalness in order to benefit employers and state’s services from the harsh exploitation of our labor. We live from our sweat and with the dream, some day, to have equal rights with our Greek fellow workers.
During the last period our life has become even more unbearable. As salaries and pensions are cut and everything is getting more expensive, the migrants are presented as those to blame, as those whose fault is the abjection and harsh exploitation of greek workers and small businessman. The propaganda of fascist and racist parties and groups is nowadays the official state discourse for issues of migration. The far right discourse is reproduced through media when they talk about us. The “proposals” of the far right are announced as governmental policies: wall in Evros, floating detention centers and European army in the Aegean, repression in the cities, massive deportations. They want to convince greek workers that, all in a sudden, we are a threat to them, that we are to blame for the unprecedented attack from their own governments.
The answer to the lies and the cruelty has to be given now and it will come from us, from migrant men and women. We are going in the front line, with our own lives to stop this injustice. We ask the legalization of all migrant men and women, we ask for equal political and social rights and obligations with greek workers. We ask from our greek fellow workers, from every person suffering from exploitation to stand next to us. We ask them to support our struggle. Not to let the lie, the injustice, the fascism and the autarchy of the political and economic elites to be dominant in their own places too; all these conditions that are dominant in our countries and led us to migrate, us and our children, in order to be able to live with dignity.
We don’t have another way to make our voices heard, to make you learn about our rights. Three hundred (300) of us will start a Hunger Strike in Athens and in Thessaloniki, in the 25th of January. We risk our lives, as, one way or another, this is no life for people with dignity. We prefer to die here rather our children to suffer what we have been through.

An afghan refugee woman sewing her mouth today

We, the Afghan political refugees here in the University Propylaea from November 22, 2010 to try to get some response to our request for political asylum. There are many reasons for bringing us one of the main reasons is that they often become tween Taliban attacks and NATO killings, massacres, looting and fires in several areas where the inhabitants are forced to abandon their property and their homes. And worse, the indifference of the state and the international community. The situation is so tragic in Afghanistan even though we know very difficult circumstances of our course to other countries and yet we have no choice but to abandon our country to survive. As published the tragic event of the sinking vessel west of Corfu, with dozens killed our people. This is our fate because forced to seek safe and a better life away from home.

Although we communicate and inform the Ministry of Civil Protection and various other ministries and agencies, and we have formally submitted a letter to the Greek Parliament, yet there has been no response on our request.

On 18/1/2011 Due to the criticality of the situation of our fellow men on hunger strike, with production of dried mouths Decision to get a response pigenontasanaferoume that neither this time received a reply to our request for political asylum. Dystichos but two people from our mouths sewed their hunger strike and today a woman 20/1/2011 symetiche the strikers and archeise hunger strike and sewing stomatous.o number of strikes reached at (9) individuals

as the only way and that way they see to be some response to our request for political asylum in accordance with international conventions and humanitarian grounds the law because our country is at war. We understand and support the Greek people. Thanks in our hearts those who already have helped and supported so far.

To: Ministry of protecting the citizen Mr Christos Papoutsis...

Flesh that we know the Afghan political refugees here in the University Propylaea from November 22, 2010 to try to get some response to our request for political asylum. In early December we had sent our formal request for political asylum, dystichos elicited no response on our request. On December 20 eirinika decided to get some response to our presence in the Department of Citizen Protection. We are very sorry but we mention otii Police drove by, and some were injured and transported to the hospital, and the ypolypoi gerizontas propylaea. After these events we have received no response to our request by the side of the state specially by the Department of Citizen Protection.

Flesh you know, Greece is one of the countries that signed the law made pursuant to this Act who agkatalipoun their country because of war algae political asylum exerei all the world that Afghanistan is a country that has over 35 years war several reasons. There is another reason as we live for many high end years in Greece and we know the koltoura and language of that country.

After so many years we agnoise the State and the Department of Citizen Protection decided to make this protest and (6) persons of us took the most difficult decision they had to take ever begin a hunger strike and sewed their mouths

Because of the critical situation of our fellow men on hunger strike and have sewn their mouths and war times have been transferred to different hospitals, and every time plysiazoun increasingly 19/1/2011 to death today, but two of our people started shall contribute the hunger strike and stitching the mouth, and the number of strikers has arrived in (8) people as there is no response schetika with our request will participate more and more on hunger strike and sewing the mouth.

So when should you give a Thimata finest life; as the toddler who skotothike ekrixi with the bomb, and sexual paranochlisi to a child and the tragic incident of sinking dozens of dead people are even those with production of dried mouths into the main. We understand the government Ellinikis specially the main Christos Papoutsis and please do not ask but thimata, although the whole world know that Afghans do not give dystazoun thimata, but please let us not dokimazeta hexane to give other thimata. Our goal is peace, unity, love and life by the Greeks.

Sincerely, The Afghan political refugees Propylaea University

Pan-Hellenic Hunger-Strike of Refugees.

We do not have any other way to let our voice be heard, so you can listen that we are right. Three hundred (300) of us, we start a Pan-Hellenic Hunger-Strike in Athens and Thessaloniki on the 25th of January.
We are refugees, men and women, from all around Greece. We came here chased by poverty, unemployment, wars and dictatorships. The multinational companies of the Western world and their political servants in our countries did not let us have another choice than risking our lives for dozens of times to come until the front-door of Europe. The Western countries that loot our places, with an infinitely better standard of living there in West, are our only hope to live as human beings. We came (with an ordinary way or not) and we work here in order to survive, us and our children. We live under the indignity and the darkness of lawlessness, in order to benefit the employers and agencies of the state from the wild exploitation of our work. We live by our sweat and dream one day to have equal rights with their Greek colleagues.

During the last time things have become very difficult for us. As far as the wages and pensions are cut-out, as far as the prices rise up, so far the migrant is presented as the blameworthy, as the responsible for the misery and the wild exploitation of Greek workers and small local companies. The propaganda of racist and fascist parties and organizations has already turned into the formal language of the State about immigration. Their phraseology gets already expressed in the exact same way by the Mass Media when they talk about us. Their “proposals” are already enshrined as governmental policies. Wall at Evros River, floating concentration camps and euro-army in the Aegean Sea, pogroms and assault forces in the cities, massive deportations. They are trying to make the Greek workers believe that we are a sudden threat for them, that it is us to blame about the attack of their own governments against them.

The answer against this lies and barbarity must be given now and we will give it, men and women refugees. We confront, with our own lives as a weapon, now to stop the injustice against us. We demand the legalization of all immigrants; we call for equal civil and social rights and obligations as Greek workers and employees. We ask from our fellow Greek workers from each human being that now suffers from the exploitation of his/her own sweat, to stand in our side. To support our struggle, not to let it prevail in their own place lies and injustice, fascism and totalitarianism of political and economic elites. Namely, what has prevailed in our own countries and forced us to migrate to be able to live with dignity, we and our children.

We have no other way to make our voice be heard, to let you learn about our rights. Three hundred (300) of us, we start a Pan-Hellenic Hunger-Strike in Athens and Thessaloniki on the 25th of January. We set our lives in danger, because one way or another we do not experience living conditions with dignity. We prefer to die here, instead of letting our children experience the same with what has happened to us.
